Thoughts on Boise State's "big win"
OK, so now that Boise has beaten VTech, many people believe that the Broncos are a legit national title contender. That they are as good as the best teams in the country. In today's AP poll they recieved 8 first place votes.

Find the complete NCAAF Final Rankings rankings on ESPN. Includes the full votes and trend for the top 25 NCAAF teams.

    Pat Forde of ESPN writes:

"The Dash picked Boise State (2) No. 1 all the way back in January and kept the Broncos there heading into this season. The reaction from a nation that ostensibly loves the underdog?"

"Now it's time for The Establishment to acknowledge the Broncos, after their steely rally for the winning score in a thrilling 33-30 victory over the Hokies on Monday night. Time for The Establishment to realize that Chris Petersen (4) is one of the five best coaches in America -- and spell the last name right, please. Time for The Establishment to slow down the puzzling fixation with cannon-armed Jake Locker (5) -- last seen leading Washington to 17 points in a loss at BYU -- and embrace the coolness, brains and accuracy of the physically unimpressive Kellen Moore (6) -- last seen playing Joe Montana in the two-minute drill on the road against a top-10 opponent."

The Forde-Yard Dash issues a call to get on the Boise bus and sprints through Week 2's dandy dozen games.

    Here are my thoughts:

People like Forde miss the point with Boise State. Boise has proven they have been developing the talent and ability to compete with the big boys, as evidenced by the wins vs Oklahoma, Oregon, and now VT. This ISN'T the issue. What IS the issue is that ANYBODY can get up for one or two big games a year and come out on top against comparable talent when the rest of their games are against a bunch of middling weaklings.

So what if Boise can beat VT, and runs the table in the WAC, and then beats 'Bama or Texas, or whoever in the champ game. That still doesn't prove to me that Boise is as good as those teams that took a pounding week in and week out against the best teams in the land. Boise can play B- football and still win every game in the WAC. They could play A football in the SEC every game and still end up with 3-4 losses.

It's not about being 'snobs' Forde. It's about proving your ability week in and week out. And Boise can't do that because of the week conference they are in. That sucks, but that's the way it is. I'm sorry, but one or two games a year against top level competition doesn't prove jack about Boise's worth. Let's stick them in the SEC and give them a schedule of 'Bama/LSU/Florida/Georgia/Auburn/Tennessee/South Carolina/Arkansas and see how good they are. Or how about the ACC? Ok, so they beat VT. Good for them. Does that mean they're going to run the table against Miami/GT/Clemson/FSU ? NO. In which case they're no better than your average 8-3 team. 8-3 teams don't make it to the BCS. Now, they win a playoff? I'll be convinced.

    Thoughts, agree, disagree?

POLL QUESTION: Alabama (the defending BCS Champ) has a schedule this season that includes games at home VS Penn State, Florida, Ole Miss, Miss St, and Auburn, and road games against Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, and LSU. How many losses would Boise State have with this schedule?

Agree. This is why NCAA needs a playoff system. With the emergences of Utah, TCU, Boise being top 10 programs we need to atleast make them run through a field of 3 of the 8 best teams in the country.

You could see it in their faces when they beat va tech...they know whats ahead of them....If alabama beats penn state their is no relief....Arkansas....then Florida...then South Carolina....later on LSU then Auburn...Thats all top 25 teams...Not to mention 6 opponents have byes before playing alabama....Give boise a shcedule only half of that and i will say they are deserving over a any 11-1 team with a similar schedule

How is it that any team can be even remotely considered for a national championship after one game. Bama wins Sat. against Penn St. and its "okay who is next" Boise St. wins one and its yee haw National championship bound, C'mon Win one against an unproven ACC team and basicaly wait around for all of the other top ten teams who play a real, challenging, schedule to pick each other off with far superior opposition. Untill Boise or any other little big school steps up their level of competition on a consistant basis and not once or twice a season, they need to realize that anyone that knows anything about football will take strength of schedule into account.

I hope so. Although I sure wouldn't mind Oregon State knocking them off in two weeks and saving us the three months of the talking heads not shutting up with their bullshit Boise hype.

Although, on second thought, a part of me hopes an incredible juggernaut surfaces, meets Boise in the championship game, and then steamrolls them like Georgia did Hawaii in that Sugar Bowl a few years back. Maybe that would shut them up once and for all.
