BJ Penn vs Carlos Condit

A welterweight matchup between Carlos Condit (27-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and B.J. Penn (16-7-2 MMA, 12-6-2 UFC) is in the works for a fall UFC event. And if you believe everything you read on Twitter, it's practically a done deal.


i am super hyped for this! very realistically a fight of the year candidate. i have to give penn the slight edge based on speed and possibility of the rear naked. as impressive as condit has been, its highly unlikely that he can take penn down, much less keep him down. this has proven to be the best method to beat penn (hughes 2, gsp 2, and fitch). i also dont think condit can outstrike penn standing (edgar 1 & 2). imo, condit's only hope is a tko, which will be very difficult given penn's iron mandible. i imagine penn will stagger condit at some point and go for a rear naked, or win a decision.

the one thing that may change my opinion is if this is a 5 round main event. penn's twitter suggested it could happen ufc 137, which, if true, would mean gsp-diaz is the main event and penn-condit would be a 3 round co-main.

the ufc definitely wants condit to win this fight, as does almost everyone else, as it would be the perfect set up for giving condit a title shot.

stylistically though, i honestly think i give penn the edge in all areas, except size and cardio.

I agree, though I don't think they'd be at all adverse to giving Penn another title shot, given that Penn is a surprisingly good draw for the UFC. He pulled like 650,000 buys against Diego Sanchez on a lacking December card.

I think BJ will be faster but he has a 6 in. reach disadvantage. It may be hard for him to get inside. BJ at 5'9" --Condit 6'2"

I am really liking Condit in this fight as a dog. His conditioning, height, reach, and scrambling ability will give BJ some problems at 170. It's safe to say BJ is the bigger talent... but Condit is relentless as of late and I wouldn't be surprised to see him win at all.

Bj has been looking good lately though imo, I think he's coming into this fight in great shape.
If Conditt can stay out of Bj's guard, than Conditt will use his range and pick BJ apart.

Most of us have a hard time betting our money. That is why if you look around the threads in the MMA forum yours is the only one with losses. Based on your betting patterns I would put you at around -300 units at least.(from what you have recorded and thats being generous) You are the only one that has lost your full bankroll here multiple times and yet you still think you are better at handicapping. You've already picked a winner and have already decided you will bet $5000 on him. To anyone here that can even some what use their brain this seems ridiculous. What if one of these fighters opens at -500? To the average MMA handicapper this would be significant, but to you it means nothing.

wrong. he's one of my favorite fighters. just think the rubber match will end up the exact same way as the last time he faced gsp so there's not much entertainment value.

Stylistically, you'd think this fight is one of the better matchups for Penn, save for Condit's ridiculous cardio. Condit's always been relatively easy to takedown and he's hittable in the standup. Baby Jay usually loses because of takedowns and being controlled, leading to his gassing, such as the second Hughes fight, second GSP fight, and his recent loss to Fitch(should have been). Penn can take Condit take down and can beat him standing. But for some reason, I can't see myself betting against Condit.

Condit has the reach advantage but Penn has beaten fighters with the reach advantage before.
