    Aldo vs Mendes
It looks like Chad Mendes is going to be Aldo's next opponent (possibly at UFC 133). Any early thoughts?? If Aldo gasses after 1 round like he did against Hominick, I can see a lopsided decision for Mendes. The only reason Aldo pulled out the decision against Hominick is because of the takedowns and he won't be able to take down Mendes like that. Then again, there have been reports that Aldo was sick so maybe we shouldn't give too much weight to the Hominick fight.

I wouldnt go as far as sayin tht the only reason Aldo pulled off the decision was because of the takedowns. Let's not forget that Aldo did also knock Hominick down with punches at least twice...Rogan was making it sound like Hominick was gettin the better of Aldo standing but he actually only did look better than Aldo during a couple minutes of the second round, and then landed a few jabs and a couple body shots during rest of the fight. He might not be able to take Mendes down like he did Hominick, but then on the flipside he wont have to worry about Mendes' stand-up as he had to with Hominick so he wont be looking for or needing takedowns anyway...will just be same situation as Faber fight.

Valid points, Vaughany. I guess what I was trying to say is that, given how the Aldo/Hominick fight unfolded, Aldo really needed those takedowns to secure the win. It seemed, to me at least, that Aldo was gassed after 1 round and if he wasn't able to take Hominick down at will in rounds 2-4, he might have been TKO'd (at least that's how I felt during the fight, but it could be that I was overly nervous due to the amount of money I had on Aldo). If Aldo gasses against Mendes, he won't be able to fall back on the takedowns. You are correct that he won't have to worry about Mendes' standup, but if Aldo is too gassed to effectively strike with Mendes, I am sure that Mendes will simply take him down and control him round after round. But again, I'm not sure what caused Aldo to gas so quickly. He showed that he can go 5 rounds with Faber, so I don't know why he had so much trouble against Hominick. Maybe he was sick?

Some would argue tht it is more tiring attempting takedowns and controlling somebody on the ground then it is to stand and strike though...just look at likes of Aaron Simpson who gassed out because of the takedowns he was attempting on Leben. But regardless, as u say it was pretty clear tht something wasn't right and that he was more tired and lethargic than he was in the Faber fight.
This article came out on Bloody elbow earlier....

"Jose Aldo dominated the first round of his UFC 129 bout against Mark Hominick. Shortly after the second round started though, the champion seemed visibly tired. Commentator Joe Rogan speculated that it could be a result of a bad weight cut, bringing up that Aldo was light headed and had to excuse himself during the Q&A portion that featured the 7 UFC champs. It seems that wasn't the case though.

BE Reader fafefifofo, brought up that right before Rogan interviewed Aldo, he complained to his corner that he should have taken antibiotics. Bloody Elbow's Tom Mendes of Brazil was able to confirm this. Here's a translation of the cornerman's reply to Jose Aldo:

"Antibiotics would not have helped at all, you’re the champion kid, **** antibiotics, everything is okay. You fought well, smooth and composed. "

Aldo made no mention of this on the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. This of course could be because he didn't take anything away from the very game Mark Hominick who took the fight to him, and showed a tremendous amount of heart and determination.

After the jump, more UFC 129 Results and Analysis from Bloody Elbow."

I'm hoping that Aldo's less than stellar performance against Hominick will help his drop his line a bit against Mendes. Chad is a great wrestler and is undefeated, but Aldo should tool him in the standup dept and I feel his TDD is good enough to keep it standing. I agree w/ Vaughany that this will look a lot like the Faber fight. I hope Aldo opens at around -250, but it will probably be -400 or so.

All I can say is that Mendes is a completely different fighter than Hominick.

Aldo is definitely the better striker than Mendes, and the question is whether he can stop the takedown. Aldo easily got up from underneath Brookins, but couldn't (wouldn't?) against Hominick.

I see aldo being about -250 to -300 here.

Aldo takes it comfortably, although I doubt he will be moving up any time soon. He seems content to stay at his weight for now. There are a ton of interesting fights, and contenders lined up, for the LW belt anyway so Dana likely won't be pushing for him to move up in the near future.

Aldo should take this easily I'd imagine. I'd like to see aldo step up a weightclass and do a few fights possibly and maybe hold the featherweight and lightweight belts simultaneously.

I think Aldo is just such a natural striker that he can anticipate Mendes coming in and tag him.
