Wanderlei Silva out of UFC 116 fight with Akiyama
I am so bummed about this. Wand is one of my favourite fighters and this would have been a war! Akiyama still supposed to fight as the UFC is looking for a replacement...wonder if Belcher wants some revenge??

"Wanderlei Silva, who was scheduled to meet Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116 on July 3, has been forced to withdraw from the card due to fractured ribs suffered in training, UFC president Dana White confirmed with MMA Fighting Tuesday afternoon.

Akiyama, who defeated Alan Belcher in his UFC debut last July, will still fight on the card, and according to White, the organization is currently working on signing his replacement. No word just yet on who that might be.

Silva (33-10-1) is 2-3 inside the octagon. He most recently defeated Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia.UFC 116 is headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin for the undisputed heavyweight title."

Its looking like Chris Leben will be the replacement only 2 weeks after his fight at the TUF 11 finale.

"Fresh off a dominant win at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale, Chris Leben (20-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) has agreed to replace injured Wanderlei Silva (33-10-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC) and fight Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-1-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in the co-headliner of next week's UFC 116 event.

A source close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) Leben has agreed to the bout and is expected to sign shortly.

Leben scored a second-round TKO of Aaron Simpson on Saturday, and if signed, his fight with Akiyama will take place after a mere 12-day layoff.

UFC 116 takes place July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Leben vs. Akiyama would take second billing on the night's pay-per-view broadcast behind a heavyweight title-unification bout between champ Brock Lesnar and interim title-holder Shane Carwin.

MMAjunkie.com passed along a report from MMAFighting.com earlier today in which UFC president Dana White confirmed that Silva had cracked ribs and was forced to pull out of the fight.

Luckily for Leben, the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not issue him a medical suspension after the Simpson fight, in which he suffered minimal damage.

With the win, Leben improved to 4-2 over his past six fights. "The Ultimate Fighter 1" cast member posted three knockouts wins in the span (over Simpson, Terry Martin and Alessio Sakara).

Akiyama, meanwhile, has been inactive since his UFC debut this past July at UFC 100, where the DREAM and K-1 HERO's veteran defeated Alan Belcher via close split decision for his 11th straight victory. "

Nothing yet, I think the only chance will be if you catch the opener for any sort of play.

Hopefully the odds start close due to Leben's latest win. I'd take AK at anything better than -250.

That sucks, I was going to put money on Akiyama. I'll probably put a few $ on Leben if he's +150 or better. I think the quick turn around is good for a fighter like Leben who at times has not been motivated to train.

its a win-win situation for leben. if he loses he still has an image of a brawler ready to go entertain the fans. if he wins he could move up in ranks and gain potential fans over seas

                                Leben is solid.

I like him at +260 seeing as how he's reinvented himself.

I agree if Leben is a good size dog ill take him. Akiyama can easily slow down in later rounds and leave Leben an opening.

i hate the punchers chance adage, but a guy who knocks as many people out as leben is always worth a shot with great odds

i think this is a win win for leben as well. even if he loses i don't think dana/ufc will hold it against him for taking the fight on such short notice.

Dang, really wanted to see Wanderlei/Akiyama fight, Akiyama himself doesnt seem to happy about this:

”If there is to be a replacement I was hoping for a big name. I spent one year preparing hard for this fight and this news has come as a big disappointment, my motivation has waned. In the worst case, I will not take part in the event. We are working hard to resolve this issue.”

Akiyama are going to feel the ringrust meanwhile Leben are just coming from recent win, and how motivated are Akiyama going to be when he have been preparing for another fight. I havent seen any lines yet but if Leben are at +260 hes definitely worth a shot. These are just my initial thoughts.
