    Shields Is UFC Bound
    Article posted on Sherdog.com

When Jake Shields was filmed sitting next to UFC boss Dana White at an April WEC show in Sacramento, speculation began to swirl over when the Strikeforce middleweight champion would be joining the sport’s biggest promotion.

Any doubt about White’s motivation toward Shields was removed when he mouthed the infamous, “He’s mine,” into the lens.

In fact, officials for Strikeforce are already looking toward a future without Shields, should he bolt as expected. A source told Sherdog.com there is a tentative plan to book fights in the division with an eye toward crowning a new 185-pound champion later in 2010, possibly at one of the company’s bigger shows in November or December.

The potential for a grand prix style tournament is not likely given the limited card space and television time for the summer shows that have already started being booked. However, some inside the promotion see the future bookings as a de facto tournament that will eventually fill the potential vacancy by the end of the year.

Fighters expected to be in the mix for title consideration include Robbie Lawler, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Dan Henderson, Jason Miller, Tim Kennedy and Luke Rockhold among others.

Middleweight is one of the deeper divisions for the company, but the loss of Shields will make it tough for Strikeforce should one of Shields’ former victims win the 185 strap.

Shields holds wins over Lawler, Henderson and Miller. Aside from “Jacare,” those three would have to be considered some of the favorites to claim the belt. Legitimacy will be an issue for any of them should they summit the division.

shields is a very talented fighter that knows how to win but he is not a good stand up guy.shields could beat silva if he takes him down but i dont think that he will ever be involved in a spectacular fight.

No not yet, but all signs are pointing that way. There are only 2-3 real challenges left for him in Strikeforce (Jacare, Diaz, Rockhold), and Diaz, who poses the biggest challenge, most likely won't agree to fight anyways unless it was a 6 figure fight.

the problem with diaz is that he cant beat any of the welterweight wrestlers.

Willing to eat crow if I'm wrong, but I think he'd get mauled by GSP and Silva. I'd like to see him stick with Strikeforce a bit longer and fight Jacare.

strikeforce does not need jake. if ufc wants to raise the person, do it.. sheilds has been on i think 3 or 4 cbs cards (strikeforce and cbs) and has been a headliner for one of the strikeforce and has his popularity increased noticeably.....no... shields is a very effective but a boring ass fighter that strikeforce cant take with his potentially heavy contract...

I also think gsp and silva are better fighters, I'm really dragging my feet on thinking shields is a great fighter. I also think he should stay with strikeforce, because I'd like to see strikeforce growing and promoting bigger fights.

The ufc needs to sign Shields, so that somone new can challenge GSP.GSP has pretty much cleared out an entire divison and theres no real challenges left for him.Or if strikeforce keeps him Jacare vs Shields would be an interesting fight.

Thats most likely Dana bashing Strikeforce, not that Shields isn't a somewhat boring fighter. But signing Shields gives him at least another credible threat to welter and middleweight. I think Dana at this point would almost be willing to slightly overpay for something in the middleweight division worthwhile of title contention.

Shields wont stand a chance in the ufc. Defending the takedown is a lost art in strikeforce as shown by mousasi.

Dana likes whatever makes him the most money at any given time.

Upon further thought, there is no way Shields should get a crack at GSP right off the bat. If he does sign with the UFC, make him fight Fitch for a shot.

i like the fitch fight as a set up to the GSP fight. Shields is legit, but we can't use a dominant win over an aging superstar as our only proof.
