I don't have huge confidence, but I've won my last two betting on Font. I'll try for three.

I don't know a whole lot about Dumont (other than rather short notice fight and her previously missing weights), but Spencer has gone the distance with both Cyborg and Nunes. Yet the odds aren't all that wide.

145 lbs.: Josh Culibao vs. Sha Yilan

Josh Culibao (8-1-1) amassed a perfect record (8-0) in his native Australia en route to UFC, earning several regional title along the way. He’s still chasing his first Octagon victory, however, suffering a technical knockout loss to Jalin Turner and fighting Charles Jourdain to a draw.
He’ll have two inches of height and reach on “Wolverine.”
Sha Yilan (19-6) — who previously fought 10 times in 2017 alone — went 5-1 in the cage during his 2020 campaign. That run saw him avenge a previous defeat and extend his overall streak to 7-1.
He has knocked out nine professional foes and submitted another five.
Losing to a colossal Lightweight like Turner on short notice is definitely forgivable, but while Charles Jourdain is a terrifying man, Culibao’s sloppiness and cardio issues are cause for concern, especially since Culibao’s successfully gone to the championship rounds three times in his career. Still, this looks like a much more forgiving matchup. Though a fearsome wrestler, Yilan is limited on the feet and has yet to face top-notch opposition; the Culibao who drew with Jourdain likely wins, while a return to his pre-UFC form would almost certainly guarantee victory.
That’s not to say that Sha can’t surprise people, especially if his relentless takedowns put a dent in Culibao’s gas tank. Perhaps this is just me trying to save face after the effusive praise I lavished on Culibao in my “New Blood” article, but I like him to sprawl-and-brawl to a comfortable decision.
                      Prediction: Culibao via unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Yancy Medeiros vs. Damir Hadzovic

A move from Lightweight to Welterweight paid immediate dividends for Yancy Medeiros (15-7), who scored three consecutive finishes and a “Fight of the Night” bonus for his war with Alex Oliveira. He’s since struggled to recapture that form, dropping three straight to Donald Cerrone, Gregor Gillespie and Lando Vannata.
His 12 professional finishes include eight by form of knockout.
Damir Hadzovic (13-6) put a UFC debut loss to Mairbek Taisumov behind him to win three of his next four, including a bonus-winning comeback knockout of Marcin Held. Later efforts proved less successful, as “The Bosnian Bomber” dropped a decision to Christos Giagos before tapping to a rear-naked choke from Renato Moicano.
He gives up nearly a half-foot of reach to Medeiros.
I’ve been hard on Medeiros in the past, but it’s worth remembering that he’s only lost to very capable fighters in the Octagon; indeed, he’s still got power and remains tough as nails. Hadzovic doesn’t figure to test his wrestling the way Gillespie did and lacks the technical flair that Cerrone and Vannata used to overwhelm the Hawaiian. He’ll give Medeiros a straight fire fight, which Medeiros presumably still has the tools to win.
Even if Medeiros never panned out, he’s at least capable of dealing with a mid-tier bruiser like Hadzovic. Expect him to overwhelm the Bosnian down the stretch for either a late finish or unanimous decision.
                      Prediction: Medeiros via unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Rafael Alves vs. Damir Ismagulov

Rafael Alves (19-9) entered “Contender Series” with the Interim Titan FC Lightweight title around his waist and left with a UFC contract after tapping Alejandro Flores with a guillotine choke. He was slated to debut in February, only to miss weight by 11 POUNDS and get yanked from the fight.
His 14 finishes are split evenly between knockouts and submissions.
Damir Ismagulov (22-1) — who has won 17 straight since his lone career defeat — made two successful defense of the M-1 Lightweight title before jumping ship to UFC in 2018. He’s presently 3-0 in the Octagon, including well-aged wins over Joel Alvarez and Thiago Moises.
He fights for the first time in nearly 21 months.
I genuinely consider Ismagulov one of the Lightweight division’s dark horses — he thoroughly shut down two extremely dangerous grapplers in Alvarez and Moises and isn’t too shabby on the feet, either. Alves, though a physical monster, doesn’t figure to derail him. Ismagulov is unquestionably the more technically sound of the two in most areas and is savvy enough to avoid Alves’ explosive bursts of offense.
Short of a head kick out of nowhere, Alves simply doesn’t have the means to overcome Ismagulov’s patience, wrestling skills and stout fundamentals. In the end, Ismagulov grinds him out on the feet and the mat for a wide decision.
                      Prediction: Ismagulov via unanimous decision

145 lbs.: Ricardo Ramos vs. Bill Algeo

“Lookin’ for a Fight” veteran Ricardo Ramos (14-3) went 4-1 as a UFC Bantamweight before returning to 145, where he finished Eduardo Garagorri with a bonus-winning rear-naked choke. He started strong against Lerone Murphy his next time out, only to succumb to ground-and-pound late in the first.
His 10 finishes are split 7/3 between submissions and (technical) knockouts.
Less than three weeks after returning to the win column under the Cage Fury banner, Bill Algeo (14-5) made his short-notice UFC debut against Ricardo Lamas, falling short but walking away with “Fight of the Night” honors. He returned to action just three months later with an upset decision of Spike Carlyle to improve his current run to 6-2.
He stands three inches taller than Ramos at 6’0.”
This has the potential to be a sleeper “Fight of the Night” contender. Algeo’s high-octane attack and disregard for defense make him a consistent entertainer, while Ramos is capable of some incredible feats of violence on both the feet and the mat. All signs point to 15 minutes of dynamic action with Ramos standing victorious.
Though Algeo is an excellent scrambler, the consistency with which Carlyle managed to force the clinch bodes ill for him, as Ramos makes up for his relative lack of brute strength with excellent back takes. With the striking mostly even, it’ll come down to the ground exchanges, which Ramos figures to win comfortably. In the end, lengthy stretches of top and back control seal the deal for “Carcacinha.”
                      Prediction: Ramos via unanimous decision

265 lbs.: Ben Rothwell vs. Chris Barnett

Four consecutive finishes — including stunning stoppages of Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett — had Ben Rothwell (38-13) on the brink of Heavyweight contention back in 2016. It’s all been downhill since, as he’s gone 2-4, while missing two years because of a United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) violation.
All told, 34 of his 38 professional wins have come inside the distance, 22 of them by form of knockout.
Chris Barnett (21-6) started his professional career 13-1 before hitting a 2-5 skid, capped off by a knockout loss to UFC veteran Alex Nicholson. He’s since put together a six-fight win streak, most recently scoring a sub-minute knockout in Sept. 2020.
“Beast Boy” replaces Askar Mozharov, himself a late replacement for Philipe Lins, on short notice.
Rothwell’s only wins in the last five years came against Stefan Struve, who was beating “Big Ben” before a number of gruesome low blows turned the tide, and a natural Light Heavyweight in Ovince St. Preux. Still, I’m just barely leaning his way here. That’s because he’ll have massive height and reach advantages over the 5’9” Barnett and his chin remains impregnable, giving him the tools to win a slugfest. In addition, Barnett last competed at Openweight, so there’s a non-zero chance the cut to 265 pounds gives him issues.
Barnett does figure to be a much better mover than the lumbering Rothwell, so he could potentially potshot his way to a decision, but his willingness to mix it up figures to work against him. In sum, Rothwell lands the heavier blows in an incredibly close affair.
                      Prediction: Rothwell via split decision

170 lbs.: Court McGee vs. Claudio Silva

Now nearly 11 years into his Octagon career, the going’s been rough for Court McGee (19-10), who has lost five of his last six bouts. His current three-fight skid has seen him fall to Dhiego Lima, Sean Brady and Carlos Condit, though none of them managed to put him away.
“The Crusher” will enjoy a 4.5-inch reach advantage over “Hannibal.”
Though constantly plagued by injury, Claudio Silva (14-2) amassed a perfect Octagon record (5-0) over the span of five years, defeating the likes of Leon Edwards and Nordine Taleb along the way. His unbeaten Octagon run finally came to an end in Oct. 2020, when James Krause survived some grappling trouble to win a unanimous decision.
He has submitted 10 professional foes and knocked out one other.
McGee’s slow slide into obsolescence has been hard to watch — his vaunted pace simply isn’t sufficient to make up for his lack of overwhelming physicality and finishing ability anymore. That’s going to cost him dearly against Silva, as while McGee might be able to outlast the one-note Brazilian if he can avoid the early tap, he can’t dish out enough damage to offset Silva’s lengthy stretches of top control.
This is McGee’s last chance. If he can’t get past Silva — who’s vulnerable to decent wrestling and a deep gas tank — his time as a noteworthy Welterweight is over. I’d love to see him defy the odds one more time, but odds are that Silva banks the first two rounds and survives the third to secure the decision.
                      Prediction: Silva via unanimous decision

125 lbs.: Bruno Silva vs. Victor Rodriguez

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): “Brazil” veteran Bruno Silva (11-5-2) got tossed right to the wolves in the Octagon, falling short against Khalid Taha, David Dvorak and Tagir Ulanbekov. Then came South African prospect J.P. Buys, whom Silva beat down less than two months back to earn “Performance of the Night.”
He steps in for the injured Denys Bondar on around three weeks’ notice.
“Vicious” Victor Rodriguez (7-3) cut his teeth in Alaska FC, where he claimed the Bantamweight title with a knockout of Jared Mazurek. This set up a late-notice UFC debut against Adrian Yanez, who handed Rodriguez his first loss since 2014 with a brutal head kick.
All seven of his professional wins have come by form of knockout.
If anyone deserves a layup at this point, it’s Silva, who’s had to fight prospect after prospect after prospect during his time in the Octagon. With all due respect to Rodriguez, he’s a considerable step down from Silva’s recent competition, offering little more than wild power-punching. Silva seemingly has him outclassed everywhere, and considering the sorts of punches he survived from Taha, Rodriguez’s puncher’s chance is minuscule.
Silva can finish this on the feet or the ground with equal ease, making his method of victory a much greater mystery than his chances of victory. I say he once again shows off the counter-striking that felled Buys for a quick finish.
Prediction: Silva via first-round technical knockout

Current Ranking: No. 4 | Last fight: Knockout win over Raphael Assuncao
Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt makes his return to the main stage with something to prove, not just to himself but also to the combat sports community, because there are still a lot of question marks surrounding the career of “No Love.” There was a time when the Team Alpha Male product was the best 135-pound fighter on the planet, or so we thought, until TJ Dillashaw took his head in consecutive title fights from 2017-18. Perhaps it’s fair to (partially) blame those losses on Dillashaw’s EPO cocktails, the same way we look less harshly upon middleweight defeats to the 2013 version of Vitor Belfort, who treated TRT the way A-Train treated Compound V. Explaining away Garbrandt’s subsequent knockout loss to Pedro Munhoz will not be as easy, unless you think Dillashaw ruined “No Love” for the rest of his career. Garbrandt’s second-round mauling of Raphael Assuncao is unlikely to bring the jury out of deliberations when you consider the shopworn Brazilian turns 39 in just a few weeks. One thing we can say for certain is that rebounding with an exclamation point has likely done wonders for Garbrandt’s confidence.
Confidence is probably not in short supply for Rob Font either after winning three straight fights for the first time in his UFC career and as a result, will celebrate another first by headlining tomorrow night’s fight card in Las Vegas. Unfortunately his current streak, capped by a technical knockout win over Brazilian bomber Marlon Moraes, is the most exciting thing we have to talk about when it comes to Font’s accomplishments. That’s not meant to take away from his four post-fight bonuses, which include a “Fight of the Night” against Ricky Simon at UFC on ESPN 7, we just have to separate excitement from development and in this case, Font still has some work to do. As far as his skill set, he’s a fairly complete fighter and capable of winning wherever the fight goes, which is why it’s been frustrating to see him give away decision losses to the likes of Assuncao and John Lineker. I will say that not getting stiffened by “Hands of Stone” lends him favor when deconstructing the Garbrandt fight.
I’m expecting the best version of Garbrandt for the UFC Vegas 27 main event. But even the best Garbrandt can’t shake the worst tendencies, like his love affair with the knockout punch. A focused, patient “No Love” — a standout collegiate wrestler — could probably make this a fairly one-sided affair. Instead, he’ll fall back on his love for boxing. And why not? It’s led to double-digit knockouts in his MMA career. That means Font will have to frustrate Garbrandt and force the ex-champ to chase him around the cage, winging wild punches. That’s going to be a pretty tall order when you consider Font has to survive five rounds against one of the most powerful sluggers at 135 pounds. I just can’t pick a fighter — even one as talented as Garbrandt — coming off another surgery, a prolonged bout with COVID-19, and a record that only sports one victory in nearly five years.
Prediction: Font def. Garbrandt by technical knockout

Carla Esparza doesn’t get a ton of respect from the combat sports community and is rarely mentioned among the top names in the division, which is a shame because “Cookie Monster” was the first-ever UFC strawweight champion and holds a submission victory over current titleholder Rose Namajunas. Despite those accomplishments, the “yeah, but” brigade will say “yeah, but she won the title without fighting Jedrzejczyk” or “yeah, but Namajunas was only 22 at the time.” It happens. Charles Oliveira captured the lightweight crown without beating Justin Gaethje or Dustin Poirier, two fighters ranked ahead of him prior to UFC 262. And despite the youth of Namajunas, “Thug” went into that fight with back-to-back submission wins over Joanne Calderwood and Randa Markos, so it’s not like they plucked her from the stands the day before the fight.
What troubles me about the recent run from Esparza, good enough to land four consecutive victories, is the fact that her Namajunas submission stands as the only finish of her UFC career. Her next seven wins — spread across five years and balanced against three losses — were all decisions, including a pair of splits in her last two. Probably not the best way to endear yourself to fickle fight fans or more importantly, fickle matchmakers. I think that’s to be expected from a wrestler as decorated as Esparza, a two-time NAIA All-American out of Menlo College, home to fellow Endeavor veterans like Danny Castillo and Ashlee Evans-Smith. “Cookie Monster” has never landed more than 50 significant strikes during any of her UFC fights, though she does have nearly 40 takedowns to her credit. That’s a nice way of saying that her fights can be boring, though I doubt Esparza is concerned with anything but the win column at this stage of her career.
Speaking of the win column, it seems Yan Xiaonan — or Xiaonan Yan, depending on where you put your surnames — can do no wrong over the last decade. “Fury” has racked up 11 wins and zero losses dating back to her days on the Chinese regional circuit, though she’s subjected to the same kind of scrutiny we gave Esparza. Namely, what’s up with all these decision wins? Not that I expect every strawweight to be packing heat, and maybe we’re just spoiled by what Namajunas and Weili Zhang have done, but it's never a good sign when a fighter scores a bunch of knockouts overseas only to join UFC and fail to finish a single opponent. Again, winning is paramount and Xiaonan is getting the job done. She’s also outlanding her opponents by nearly double — and sometimes triple — to the point where she scored 150 significant strikes against Syuri Kondo at UFC Beijing in late 2018. “Fury” will wrestle when needed, grounding Karolina Kowalkiewicz five times in their Feb. 2020 affair.
It doesn’t take an MMA wizard or some sort of Magic 8-Ball to predict what Esparza is going to do when the opening bell sounds. She’ll juke and jive and throw something that could be mistaken for punches (if the light is low and the stream is choppy) then barrel in for the takedown or some wall-and-stall. Hard to knock it because it works, however tedious it may be for the Just Bleed generation. Xiaonan sports a pretty good takedown defense when you look at the numbers, recently shucking off eight of 10 attempts from Claudia Gadelha. The counter to that is “Claudinha” is not the wrestler that Esparza is, so “Fury” will need to keep pedaling that bicycle when “Cookie Monster” starts reaching for the jar. I’m not sure we can expect Xiaonan to last 15 minutes without ending up on the floor at least once or twice, but I do think her movement, coupled with her superior striking, will be enough to treat the one-dimensional Esparza like a boardwalk whack-a-mole.
Prediction: Xiaonan def. Esparza by unanimous decision

I capped this at -200 for Font. To get this at nearly even odds is surprising. Gotta go with Font here as he has more paths to victory and hasn't been finished by KO, which is Cody's only path to win. I like Font to get the job done here.

I think Dumont is live here. She's got the better standup and Spencer isn't elite at securing takedowns. To me, getting wrecked (Spencer won 0 of 8 rounds against Nunes/Cyborg) but not finished against elite competition doesn't mean too much.

I don't agree. I think Garbrandt could win by Decision also.
