Crazy bitcoin story - what’s your wildest?
Was reminded of a bitcoin experience I had when I was a mod on bitcointalk forum several years ago.

The currency exchange section was plagued with scams. Many people would send/receive payment and either reverse payment or never receive the bitcoin. For every 10 posts that sounded crazy maybe, 1 would be legit. Well I lucked out one night.

This brand new account said he had DMV fines to pay and would pay a high fee in bitcoin. I messaged him curious. He had $1200 in NJ fees and apparently lived in Europe. I was very suspicious now. He then offered to pay 2x if I make payment. I laughed at this unbelievable offer, clearly a scam so I said okay send bitcoin first and I’ll make payment.

Next thing I know I heard a ding and noticed I had received $2500 in bitcoin. He paid me an additional $100 and asked me to sign him up for some porn site for a month.

I was in shock. I signed him up for two porn sites ($20 each I think) and paid his DMV debt. I could not believe I made a quick $1250 but I did. He never posted again after that.

    What’s your wildest?

I got robbed for $3,000 in December by that dumb iphone virus where when you hit copy and it replaces the address you want to send it to with the cyber criminals address

it’s all good though. It was a learning experience.

Not a bitcoin story, but... I was playing online on a big site (I forgot the name) and had no money on my account and was messing around on there heads up black jack NEW site where it was player vs. player. I won the first game which was with free chips or play money and they paid me with real money. Long story short I got the guys phone number I was playing heads up and called him and said hey, they are paying us in real money, obv he knew that. I told him to take turns winning and I played until I was out of play money. I ended up winning like $1600 and the next day lost $200 in the nfl and cashed out for about $1400 US

I have a fairly unbelievable story about Bitcoin.

In about 2004-2005 a guy who had been running an illegal HYIP approached me about working with him to develop a new payment system that sounded very much like Bitcoin turned out to be.

He was kind of a rebel who resented what the US govt was doing to e-gold and other underground payment systems.

He had an annoying style and a very fixed set of ethical standards. He was kind of an angry dude.

I initially agreed but very quickly had a falling out and was glad to be rid of him at the time.

Pretty sure this was "Satoshi" or one of the group we now know as Satoshi.

Satoshi Nakamoto was a security researcher named David Kleiman:

If you want to see what his persona was like online you can read his posts on the bitcointalk forum:

Could be, but I doubt Dave Kleiman was the person I spoke to.

He was available too many hours of the day to be holding down a regular job at the time.

It is possible you came across Satoshi.

Kleiman had a motorcycle accident which paralyzed him and confined him to a wheelchair, which could cause anyone to be angry. Being a security researcher could also mean being online for substantially long periods of time.

With the advent of telecommuting it has become much harder to tell whether or not someone has a job simply by looking @ the amount of time they spend online.

I had a former boss contact me in 2013 and asked me to work for him. I agreed. He gave me a signing bonus since he didn't have to pay an employment agency to find a person in my position.

I had invested in bitcoin back in 2011 and lost a bit of money with one of the crashes but I was still interested in it. I then read an article in 2013 that showed a chart that listed the percentage over time of countries buying bitcoin. China was showing an ever-increasing amount so I bought a bunch of bitcoin at $300 each. The price quickly went up to $1000 each.

Later in the year I watched a YouTube video where the guy said Quark Coin (an alternate crypto coin) was going to sky rocket so I bought all I could. He was right. Within weeks it skyrocketed to multiples of its value that I bought it at.

Then came December 2013. A Chinese crypto exchange announced they were going to offer Quark Coin so the price went up even further. I thought my original $10k investment was going to turn into $1 million and I could retire. The date and time of the offering was advertised and I waited on my computer for the Chinese to drive up the price.

But instead the price dropped like a rock! It turns out that the Chinese exchange decided not to offer Quark Coin. The Chinese people who bought coins at that exchange complained that when the exchange announced a coin would be offered the price would go up before they could buy so they ended up buying an inflated coin.

The price of Quark Coin dropped but it didn't drop to its original price so I made some money. I used the gains to put a down payment on my house. After 5 years of living in my house I have a good amount of equity. Even more importantly I have a house and yard where I can do the things I want with it like plant new plants.

Nice. I have had large bitcoin investments but the moment the tx fees went over $1 and constant ups/downs, I saw it more as a gambling tool so I got out. At one point had 80 bitcoin back when they were $100 each. Still remember betting 1-10 Bitcoin on sport bets long time ago. I made a good return but not as good as my friend did. He turned his $7000 investment into $200,000. It was over 300k but he didn't get out in time. $230k overall and 30k in tax he told me.

Bought Ripple at the start. Sold a lot of it early and can't find the secret key of a lot that I hold.
