    MLB Trivia - 6/27/06
What pitcher logged the most innings during the 1970s?

And just so we're clear on the question, the 70s ran from 1970 through 1979

Wow. Quite a few possibilities are coming to mind. But who was the real workhorse of the era?

    I'll guess Phil Niekro.

Good guess, Mud. Knucksie pitched the 2nd-most innings from 1970-79: 2,881.

The only guy ahead of him hurled 24 more innings. Like Niekro, the answer I'm looking for was right-handed.

That's averaging 7 innings a start based on 41.5 starts a year. That's highly impressive.

If my math's right, Gaylord made 369 starts during that 10-year span, and only one relief appearance. So he averaged just under eight innings per outing Pitched more than 300 innings five of those seasons, and only once saw his ERA climb above 4.00.

It's a shame we will never see those type numbers here in the modern era.
