Race isn't an issue, they say, but then they need to constantly make-up holidays to focus everyone's attention directly on to race? MLK, Black History Month, Jackie Robinson, etc. all give unnecessary attention to blacks if race truly isn't an issue.

Ehh. I see no problem with one day per baseball season being used to honor Jackie Robinson.

It's worthy of another decade at least of being remembered. The next generation need to know that multiculturalism is a fairly new thing in our society and learn from the mistakes of the past.

Probably over doing it by doing it every year. I could see doing it every 5 or 10 years. What about Larry Doby?
Doby was signed by the Cleveland Indians by their owner Bill Veeck in 1947, eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League. In his rookie season, Doby hit 5-for-32 in 29 games.
During the 1997 season, when the long-departed Jackie Robinson's number 42 was being retired throughout baseball, and the still-living Larry Doby was being virtually ignored by the media, an editorial in Sports Illustrated pointed out that Doby had to suffer the same indignities that Robinson did, and with nowhere near the media attention and implicit support.

I believe he was the first African American ball player to play in Major League Baseball...At the time all African American ball palyers were forced to play in the "Negro Leagues" ...This is why it is such a historical event in baseball..

Does it really bother you? Jackie Robinson was an incredibly important figure not just in baseball history but in American history. Not to mention the guy could really play. The one day per season tribute is well deserved.

It bothers me more that the entrance to Citi Field is a tribute to him.
