Braves acquire 1B Teixeira from Rangers
The Braves needed a first basemen extremely bad too. I mean they had 49 year old Julio Franco playing there, and there was absolutely no way they were going to make any type of legitimate run for the playoffs with him playing every other day.

Braves acquire 1B Teixeira from Rangers

FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Braves apparently have won the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes.

According to a report Monday from the Fort Wort Star-Telegram, the Braves acquired the slugging first baseman and lefthander Ron Mahay from the Texas Rangers for catcher-first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia, minor league shortstop Elvis Andrus, minor league righthander Neftali Perez and a player to be named.

The Braves are in a three-way battle in the National League East Division with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta (55-51) currently is in third place, 4 1/2 games behind the Mets and a game back of the Phillies. They are 2 1/2 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the crowded wild card chase.

Rumors surrounding Teixeira, who is arbitration eligible after this season and a free agent after 2008, have been surfacing for months.

Mahay helps fill the void left by Mike Gonzalez, who is out for the remainder of the season after undergoing elbow surgery.

Mahay is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA in 28 relief appearances. Atlanta hoped lefthander Wil Ledezma, whom it acquired from the Detroit Tigers in June, would be the answer but he was designated for assignment Sunday.

The 27-year-old switch-hitting Teixeira has recovered from a slow start and is batting .297 with 13 homers and 49 RBI in 78 games this season.

Teixeira did not get his average over .250 to stay until May 4 and was out from June 9-July 8 with a strained left quadriceps muscle. That ended a streak of 507 consecutive games played.

In his fifth major league season after being selected in the first round of the 2001 draft out of Georgia Tech, Teixeira is a two-time Gold Glove winner who has a career average of .283 with 153 homers and 499 RBI in 693 games.

Teixeira, who has averaged 35 homers in his first four years, will fill a big void in Atlanta's offense. So far this season, Braves first basemen rank last in the National League with a .211 average and .815 on-base-slugging percentage.

Using mostly Scott Thorman, Craig Wilson and Saltalamacchia, Atlanta's first basemen have combined for 12 homers and 41 RBI.

Saltalamacchia and Andrus are the key players in the deal for the Rangers.

The 22-year-old Saltalamacchia was hitting .284 with four homers and 12 RBI in 47 games in his rookie season with Atlanta. The switch-hitter started the season at Class AA Mississippi, batting .309 with six homers and 13 RBI in 22 games.

A catcher by trade, Saltalamacchia has split time between catcher and first base. He is a player projected to hit .300 with 30 homers at the major league level.

Andrus is a smooth-fielding defender with speed and hitting potential. Only 19 and already playing at high Class A Myrtle Beach in the Carolina League, the righthanded hitter is batting .244 with three homers, 37 RBI with 25 stolen bases.

Feliz, also 19, is 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in seven games - six starts - with Danville at rookie level Appalachian League.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that minor league lefthander Matt Harrison also is included in the deal. Harrison is 5-7 with a 3.39 ERA in 20 starts at Mississippi.

I don't want to blow this too far out of proportion: but this is a significant move made by the Braves.

With the wildcard, in my opinion, being wide open, I think this could get them in the playoffs if Tiexiera hits like he has in his past. I was actually thinking the Phillies were going to be the fav to get the wildcard. Maybe, after this move, that line of thinking needs to be re-thought.

As a long-time Braves fan, I hated to give up Salty. I think he's got a chance to be a good one for a long time. But you gotta give up talent to acquire talent.

Tex will help the offensive production at first base - no question. But the Braves chances for a run at the post-season is going to come down to pitching, as it usually does for everyone. Is Smoltz healthy? How about the rest of the rotation after Huddy? And Wickman scares the hell out of me every time he comes in with a one run lead.

As much as it pains me to say this, the Mets are the class of the east.

I don't think this matters at all. I think Texiera will be only marginally better than Salty, if that. Anyone who's been betting baseball this year knows Atl needs one thing, and they need it more than almost any other team in the bigs, maybe even more than Detroit - relief pitching. They should trade Texiera and a few other decent backups for a slew of reasonable relievers IMO.

Oh I didn't see they got Mahay. Well that's good. Still, I think they should trade Texiera for a top reliever or two, and then they'd be in quite good shape.

Great trade for the Rangers. Saltalamacchia's the real deal and will put up huge numbers in Texas, while Andrus is a highly regarded prospect. Teixeira will certainly help, but the offense wasn't the real problem in Atlanta, despite the lack of production at 1B. This doesn't put the Braves over the top in the NL, and even with Andruw Jones' contract coming off the books after this year, it's not a given that Atlanta will be able to resign Teixeira.

Why not just keep Salty and play him everyday at first?

Well...I've love your Ganch-analysis posts but I'm going to have to disagree with you here, Ganch.

Tex is a gold-glove first baseman and Salty been playing first base for the last fifteen minutes. It's being kind to say he's a work in progress at first.

And offensively, I don't think it's fair to compare a guy who's a proven major league hitter to a guy with less than half a season in the bigs.

Tex will be a major upgrade over Salty for this season and next. Now, can the Braves get him signed after next year. Possibly, but I'm not convinced.

Actually, the relief pitching has, on the whole, been much better than last year (which still isn't saying a whole lot). The Braves have had trouble in the rotation behind Smoltz and Hudson...and Wickman has just been a nightmare.

I remember going to a CLV/STL game last year when Wickman was brought in to close the deal. I was sitting in back of some Indians fans and saw and heard a lot of rustling and a lot of "God Dammit Wedge" comments coming from the front. It was because Wedge put in Wickman. I can remember the comments coming from the Indian fans, the most memorable one was: "Light the Wick. It's only a matter of time before this explodes!"

Sure enough, Cards came back and won in the 9th really by no fault of Wickman's. Shoppach came in to catch in the late innings and dropped a fly ball right in front of home plate. That opened the flood gates.

Sure, I can see where the Braves, along with about 25 other teams, could use some bullpen help. I have a hard time grasping how Braves fans couldn't help but be excited to have Teixiera in Atlanta. I think this is somewhat of a homecoming for him as well. Isn't he a former Yellow Jacket? I don't know Teixiera's contract status but that might be a good thing for Braves fans.

Agreed that Saltalamachia is probably going to be a solid major leaguer. But ya gotta give up something in order to get something. If the Braves can have him for a decent amount of time (contractwise), this will prove to be a helluva deal for the Braves.

I am one of those Braves fans who is excited to add Mark to the roster.

Yes, Tex is a former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket.

He's under contract through next year 2008. Then he can become a free agent. His agent is Scott Boras. So, he won't come cheaply to whichever team gets him.
