expect the Boston offense to just tee off against Oakland’s Dallas Braden (4-7, 3.83 ERA) tonight.

Braden hasn’t made a big-league start since June 22 when he gave up four runs in six innings to the Reds. He made a rehab start on Thursday for Stockton and allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings. Oakland lost his final eight starts he made for the big club and he gave up four runs or more five of the eight games.

On the hill for Boston is veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (3-8, 5.65 ERA) who hasn’t looked good in his last two starts, allowing a combined 12 earned runs in 7.2 innings. Prior to that though, he had three decent starts in a row and the Red Sox have won three of his last four against Oakland and six of his last nine. He’s held the A’s to three runs or less in eight of his last 10 outings against them, including his last start in Oakland when he pitched a complete game last year, allowing two runs in an 8-2 victory.

Boston is 13-6 when Wakefield starts the second game of a series and 44-20 on Tuesdays. The A’s are on slides of 1-10 in Braden’s last 11, 6-18 when he’s favored and 0-4 when he pitches at home.
