    Detroit, Oakland Under 8½

Overall solid pitching has the under looking strong in Game 1 of the ALCS between the Tigers and A's in Oakland.

In Game #1 of the ALCS, we like the Detroit/Oakland game to go under the total for a number of reasons.

Barry Zito, the A's ace, is coming off a gem against the Minnesota Twins in his last outing, allowing only one earned run on four hits in eight innings. He has a fine career ERA of just 2.64 against the Tigers, and allowed just one earned run against them in his only start this season. Detroit doesn't hit lefties as well as they do righties and they score less runs per game when a southpaw takes the hill.

Tigers starter Nate Robertson was superb when pitching on the road this season, posting an ERA of just 3.47. We also suspect the A's bats to be a little bit rusty with the long layoff after their sweep of the Minnesota Twins.

Finally, both of these teams have outstanding bullpens to shut down the opposing offenses in the later innings. This contest should stay safely under the total.
