    Liriano still having arm problems.
Liriano left the game early today because of arm troubles. If there going to make a strong push at that division crown, they need to get him back healthy in the rotation somehow.

Yeah, he looked like he was in pain when he threw that last pitch in the top of the third.

I'm not sure the Twins are done without him. They've made a good little run the last five weeks without him in the mix. Matt Garza has looked good in relief of Liriano so far. A's got a gift run in the top of the sixth when 2B umpire Randy Marsh missed an out call on Milton Bradley stealing second. Jay Payton followed with an RBI ground rule double for the game's only tally so far.

I hope they shut him down for the rest of the year, but then again I am a White Sox fan.

If they make the playoffs, and I dont think they will...
They stand no chance without Liriano...

They rushed him back, and now he "IS" gone for the season. They should of just let him rest until the end of the regular season, and if they made the playoffs, bring him back then.

Dont risk hurting your future more so you can try to make the playoffs this year.

I heard if he has Tommy John surgery he would likely miss all of '07...
That would be a tough break both for him and for the Twins...

No further damage was found in the MRI, but as onlooker stated above he is being shutdown for the rest of the year.

From a handicapping perspective, it really shows how delicate pitching success is, and how treacherous it can be betting on a pitcher coming back from an injury late in the season.

I'm not talking about pitchers coming back from a major injury who have been out for months and have had a lot of time off and a lot of rehab, I mean situations like these, where a pitcher has been going for the whole year and develops discomfort or a minor injury, misses a start or two, and then comes back. That is a dangerous situation to bet on.

Andy Pettitte and Noah Lowry were in similar situations recently, and both had poor return starts, with Pettitte leaving with a different injury.

Getting hitters out in a game situation involves peak exertion which isn't easily replicated in practice. The old "pain-free bullpen session" reports that always accompany these situations are not completely insignificant but should usually be taken with a grain of salt.

Between the time Liriano lost on Aug 7, and subsequently went on the DL, and his next appearance yesterday (Sep 13), the Twins were 20-13. So I'm not buying into the notion that the Twins are necessarily done. Certainly they'd have a better chance with a healthy Liriano in the mix, but I'm not writing them off yet.

They are winning again tonight, so you might be right Willie.
