Yankees versus Angels

How big is the acquisition of Cory Lidle for the Yankees looking now?
With Mike Mussina recently going on the DL and the Yankees needing everything from their pitching staff as they head into the home stretch with a 5 1/2 game lead over Boston in the AL East, the much overlooked part of the deal that also brought Bobby Abreu to the Bronx back on July 30 is now looking huge for the Pinstripers, especially when you consider that since joining New York, he has 2 wins in 4 starts and has only given up 7 earned runs in over 22 innings.
Furthermore, Lidle has won his only start on the road, his last outting which happened to be at Fenway Park as part of the 5 game sweep by the Yankees, and in that game Lidle blanked the powerful Red Sox over 6 innings. Both of Lidle's wins since joining the Yankees have been in day games; the aforementioned Boston game as well as one against rival Toronto at home.
His opponent is Angels righthander Ervin Santana, who may be suffering from what so many over-used young pitchers go through in the second half of the season, which is arm fatigue. Santana started 18 games in the first half of the season and logged a 3.97 ERA but all of that throwing may be catching up to him now as he is just 2-3 with a 5.09 ERA in the second half and unfortunately, with the Angels in the middle of a pennant race, he won't be getting much rest in the coming weeks.
Play: New York Yankees.
