I think he deserves a standing ovation from Mets fans.
I really hope he gets it.
Maybe one of our Mets fans can tell us how it went later...

(chomp) Bait taken.
They cheered him, from what the announcers said, at least 5 times...every time he popped his head out, went to BP, etc., everyone stood. At his first AB, they stood and clapped for about 2 minutes. They even cheered when he got a hit, and chants of "Mike Pi-Az-za" rained down. The funniest part was when Piazza was at bat, Loduca threw out Giles stealing 2nd (somethign Piazza is and was HORRIBLE at), and the crowd started with "Paul Lo-Du-Ca". Classic. If he didn't already know it, the crowd let Piazza know that he is one of the greatest Mets of all time and all that he's done (and didn't do lol) was oh-so-greatly appreciated.
Most importantly, the Mets' pen was strong, Wagner did his typical "put 2 on and strike out 3", and Beltran had 3 doubles, finally hitting well at Shea in a 4-3 win.

Class act by Mets fans, he didnt deserve anything less even if I did hate him for a while during the peak of the rivalry. It made me sick when some Braves fans booed Glavine the first time he came back to the Ted. I thought like what are this people thinking...
He´s one of the best catchers of all time and the standing O was well deserved

I'd qualify catchers by putting "offensive" in front of it. Trust me, I love Piazza, but the man jjust could not throw the ball to 2nd with accuracy. He did block balls well, and played his ass off though, and that's why he's loved so much in NY.
On a side note, what do you think about the Mets retiring #31? There were numerous signs about it in the crowd, but when you consider the only numbers retired by the Mets are Tom Terrific, Casey Stengel, and Gil Hodges, I just don't think they'd do it. If he was a homegrown Met, maybe, but I'd bet you'll see #5 retired at the new ballpark sometime in the early 2020s, before Piazza's #31. Although it'd make for an interesting celebration to open the new stadium in 2009....whaddya think?

My guess is that if he's HOF worthy, hes worthy of having his # retired. And I think Piazza is gonna have both.
And youre right about offensive...

But does HOF = retired # automatically? I don't think so, especially in baseball, but if they do it, it will almost certainly be in 2009 to make the stadium opening a bigger event.
As i'm writing this, Piazza just threw Chavez out at 2nd lol.
