    Betislands, DDOS attacks, and gmail
I got an email I think from Betislands today. I will post some of it so that others can tell me if they got it or not.

I want to take a moment and thank you for setting up an account and playing with Betislands in the past. This past month we experienced som DDOS attacks at our website, and some players were unable to log on from time to time. I appreciate your patience during this time, and it appears those problems are behind us as we have hired the highest technology to protect us against further attacks.
We have continued our same day payouts, the fastest in the industry and a true dime line to 189 for baseball. In addition we have instituted a 20% monthly rebate for net losses in the event you experience a losing month. This will be in cash with no rollover.
So if you are currently playing at other sportsbooks, and you want faster payouts and better odds, call me or join us on live chat.

It goes on some more. It was signed Jay "Dutch" Van Dyke.

From trolling the "sportsbooks and the industry" threads, I can see that BI is highly rated and that generally people think highly of them. I also appreciate a book that takes the time to email me explaining when issues go on rather than waiting for the users to go to live chat. That being said...a site that is affected by computer attacks IMO should not be still using gmail accounts for company emails If Mr. Van Dyke is an agent then my point is moot, but if he works for them why would any site still be using gmail accounts for business emails.

Does this seem strange to you?

        Hey guys,

Hope all is well yes sometimes our agents use an alternate gmail email since they have a better chance of getting inboxed than with other email providers I do not see how that translates into any sort of issue for any client or for our sportsbook , this is a rather public industry a gmail email is not going to change that.

The most important flag a sportsbook can raise is not tech issues , CS issues , email server issue is payout issues if a book can pay their clients on time and promptly that is what counts the rest you could say is gravy.

Let me know if you have any more questions , I am here to help.

        Cheers!

        Jon

The only problem with the gmails and Yahoos is it opens up for more fraud attempts. People might start getting SportsbookABCaccouting@gmail etc. Players may feel better about writing to verified servers.

BetIslands wasn't hacked and weren't accessed by a thirds party. A dos attack affects someone's ability to connect with the the webserver and domain. It's blocking the path for users but not breaking in. The attack can also affect the email server if mail.sportsbookxyz isn't hosted somewhere else. Gmail has been a solution for attacked books in the past.

I recently got a call from betislands(last week) the call showed up as a phone number from Toronto.

Any meaning to this since they are not remotely located near Toronto?

No sports book should ever use gmail, yahoo, or any other one except one they control on there own servers. Just laziness or lack of IT staff is only reason not to have own emails- it is so simple it boggles my mind how anyone can trust a book using gmail.
