    we knew this was comming
    5 Mar 2008

OTTAWA, Ontario -- As reported by the National Post: "The federal government said Tuesday it is considering new measures to stamp out Internet gaming sites based on a native reserve in Quebec, in a move that could spark conflict between Ottawa and Canada's First Nations ahead of a second national 'day of action' this summer.

"The government deems the 400 or so poker and sports-betting sites operating from the Kahnawake reserve near Montreal to be illegal, but neither federal nor provincial governments have attempted to enforce the law. Now Ottawa is reviewing that position.

"...The "'other measures' are understood to be moves to restrict banks and credit card companies from conducting financial transactions with illegal Internet operators.

"...The Mohawks of Kahnawake say these laws do not apply to them since they are a sovereign nation.

"... [Michael Lipton, a Toronto lawyer], said the horse racing industry has had a monopoly on gambling in Canada for years, with Woodbine Entertainment currently holding a lock on government-sanctioned online horse betting.

"...Rather than attempting prohibition, Mr. Lipton said the government should bring the Kahnawake sites into the system and regulate them..."

I'm wondering if the questions regarding "super user accounts" that Absolute was found guilty of and Ultimate bet is being questioned over have something to do with this?

I say it's way to hard to enforce now that they have ignored it for so long. Sort of like squaters rights.... It's not been hiden so leave it alone. I do like the idea of regulating it so that the Canadian government gets some revenue.

WorldSportCenter was another black eye and supposedly linked to crime. A lot of the companies that were there left and only do marketing and sales and do wagering elsewhere. The Kahnawake wanted to keep books from taking phone calls at one time but backed off that. SIA is really the only book that would be affected. Their office is in the Kahnawake building.

The last time the Canadian government tried to play hardball with the Mohawk tribe, it ended up with what is termed here in Canada as the "Oka Crisis".

The cliff notes version is that the government will not aggressively pursue anything that has to do with the Mohawks and their "sovereign land". Possibly a negotiated settlement but with the distrust between the natives and the government, for something like that to take place would take years of negotiations and maybe even a minor miracle. The Mohawk tribe has stood up to the government once recently, they will do it again if they feel their rights are being infringed upon.

So many inaccuracies hard to find a place to start.

This was posted at another site and clearly explains the truth of of a very respected and solid force in online gaming for the last decade.

If I can add my own 2 cents...

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...this is sabre rattling, pure and simple.

Folks, I'll tell you a dirty little secret here that most people dont really give a lot of thought to throughout the course of their daily lives.

See, "stories" like this, tales of conflict and intrigue dont actually come out of the Government, they come from a single reporter or columnist looking for material for the next day's story (everybody has to make a living-I dont begrudge anybody that) and conflict and tension moves a lot more papers than stories of the children of the world holding hands and unicorns jumping over rainbows.

Unfortunately, in the world of electronic media, every Tom, Dick and Harry with a keyboard and an AOL account will take the story as gospel and cut/paste like lemmings going over the side of the cliff.

I spent a lot of time exchanging emails with this particular reporter and when I didnt give him that big Mohawk inflamatory response he was looking for (every coward loves to watch a good schoolyard fight, right?), he lost his cool and let me know full well what direction his story was going to take.

In the spirit of cooler heads prevailing, I'd like folks to stop for a minute. Think about how many times youve read stories almost idenentical to this one in the past (coming out of the Canada of course, and picked up by the newswire services). Ever notice its the same story, run twice a year usually in August/September, then again in late January/February?

We call it the "Mohawk Boogeyman" in these parts. Its sort of like how television news (coughs..ahem.."Fox News") hypes the "Amber Alert" in the US, applied in spirit to this part of Canada. Whenever we enter into a traditionally slow news period, you can guarantee the Mohawk Boogeyman will rear his head in the press as a way to keep people wired up and fearful of the "red menace" that lurks just across the river from Montreal.

After all, you cant trust those "Sneaky Indians", right? You can never tell what those "people" are thinking, and maybe they might even want revenge, right?

We've been doing this for nearly 9 years now folks, without interference, military incursion or the involvement of any SWAT teams. Canada knows where to reach us if ethey want to speak with us, and we know where to reach them. Neither of us really need some opinionated newspaper columnist to act as a go-between when we have a message to send. We're all adults here.

In the words of Flavor Flav, "Dont Believe The Hype".

            Thanks, Constant Reader.

Unreal....I'm sure that like most up here following this, it's incredible to concieve that somebody wants to wade into this cesspool again.

I've got nothing to add to the background or the story, as Cobra and the previous post sum it up nicely. But if this issue really was brought up by our all-knowing governing representatives, I can assure you that for every member who was thinking "Yeah, good idea. Let's get 'em!", there were 10 saying to themselves, "Are you F**KING kidding me!!?? WTF?!!"

Not exactly like you have to delve deep into our historical archives to understand what happens when you start messin' around with the Mohawks or any other of the First Nations Peoples.....
