    Serious Question for the experts?
PlEASE don't laugh: For tax purposes:
If you bet $800 on a team that's -1000 on the moneyline and get back $880, have you won $880. or $80?

I know the commonsense answer of course.

Good response. And probably the best I will see. I bet at a local sportsbook here .I was asked for ID or Players Card for the payout. I laughed and said for $80??? She said anything over $600. we have to show.

Not a dumb question at all. Obviously it's only $80 profit, but I've seen people say the entire payout is considered winnings for tax purposes.

Maybe someone who knows for sure will chime in still.

Thanks Optional. One guy in the line behind getting ready to bet, said..."I wouldn't worry about it, they didn't ask for your ss #" But still crazy to me!

In the UK it's tax free but if you're a resident of another country then you should show only the profits are taxable, that's what the logic says.
