    Hi,
I am confused on how the USA has made online sports betting illegal, but you can still use all these websites to bet on sports and all you have to do is not deposit directly into the book. Is this like downloading music/movies where it is illegal but it is really hard to prove/no one does anything against it?

Online betting is illegal in both Canada and the U.S, but virtually impossible for cops to enforce. The govt knows this so I suspect some day they might legalize and find a way to tax it.

The betting firms dont care, they just want your money.
And I never been "ratted out" by any of them

What people confuse here is that the UIGEA makes the financial transactions related to online gambling illegal. Essentially, if anyone is ever prosecuted for online gambling it will be for either tax evasion or sending funds to or receiving funds from an online book not simply playing there.

          Never

I doubt they would throw a first offender in jail either.
Probably just a fine, probation and warning

Got arrested and prosecuted for online gambling...

... but I asked my lawyer to have a side-bar with the judge. My judge was from Tennessee so I told my lawyer to give the judge my play on the Tennessee/Auburn game.

Judge recessed the session and postponed till next Monday. On Saturday Tennessee covered easy and the judge dismissed my case on that Monday. Glad they covered easy or I would've been in the clinker playing dice.

It's NOT illegal to gamble online, it's only illegal to accept bets or for financial institutions to process payments.

So your credit card company isn't legally allowewd to let you deposit to an online gambling site. But you can't get in trouble, only the financial institutions or the websites accepting your action.

Some states have laws making it illegal for you to bet online, Washington state is the worst making it a felony. In those states it's like downloading music where people still do it, but MOST states don't have laws making it illegal for you to place a bet online and the UIGA also doesn't make it illegal for you to place a bet online.

lets stop the bs. If you're playing you're sending $. Maybe they're not interested in going after small time players. But from what I can see if the govt decides to screw with somebody the laws are there.
