Paolo Maldini and Zvonimir Boban have managed to get rid of almost all of the expensive players brought in by the previous Chinese owners.

The Rossoneri were able to cut the wage bill by selling six players, namely Fabio Borini to Hellas Verona, goalkeeper Pepe Reina on loan to English side Aston Villa, defender Mattia Caldara on loan to Atalanta, Ricardo Rodriguez to PSV Eindhoven, Suso to Sevilla and Polish forward Krzysztof Piatek to German side Herta Berlin.

These operations netted a profit of around $78 million, paving the way for the great return of 38-year-old Milan icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who completed a free transfer from MLS club LA Galaxy to return to the club he last played for in 2012.
Danish defender Simon Kjaer and Bosnian goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, along with belgian Alexis Saelemaekers and U.S. left-wing Antonee Robinson came in on loan deals to bolster the squad following the multiple departures.
