They are missed all the time. Plus it makes the game more exciting.

I've watched at least half the games in the MLS this season and I have yet to see anyone miss. Three penalty kicks tonight and all easily converted.

So penalty shootouts should be eliminated?

You havent watched enough soccer... I saw Samuel Eto'o miss an extra kick to tie the game against Mallorca 2 weeks ago. Watch some real soccer where more than 50,000 fans watch the games live... these players are in pressure cookers, just like a technical freethrow.

A little more pressure on a pen kick than a free throw. A pen kick could possibly be 100% or your scoring whereas a free throw is 1%

Juan Roman Riquelme missed a penalty that would have put them in the Champions League final. Martin Palermo missed three penalties in a single match in a World Cup Elimination match.
Roberto Baggio '94
Happens all the time.

What a retarded thread, first that tw*t Bconn saying soccer is sh*t, then a thread saying there shouldnt be penalties
What you are basically saying is that goals can now be awarded without it going in the net, that a foul in the box equals a goal

OK maybe not just award a goal.
But Jeeez, I think it should be a little harder to make them.

They award FT's in basketball without a goalie and they still miss them.

I penalty kick is about the same as a guy taking free throw's 1 foot away from the rim.

Actually it is not. If you hit the ball below the middle of the ball too hard it will sail over the bar. When you kick a soccer ball the contact area between the toes of your shoe and the ball is very small resulting in unpredictable trajectories. 99% of the skill to score a penalty kick is done before you kick the ball. Timing is everything. You have to kick the ball a split of a second after the goalie commits to a corner without actually looking at the ball and running fast. There is no holder like football to hold the ball for you. In basketball both hands control the ball and the smoother you release the ball the better. You can also throw a brick and use the backboard to bounce the ball in.

I always thought just kick it right down the middle because the goalie always guesses left or right. I saw a study once that if you can kick (direct) it in the upper half of the goal, that the success rate is higher but there's a chance you could put it over the goal.

If you keep doing this then the goalie will not move on your kick. Goalies study video of players and know their tendencies too. Every kick you make has to be different cause the goalies scout you.
