Jerry Lewis has talked many times about Dean's decline after his son, a jet pilot, was killed in a military exercise with the Air National Guard. Dean was actually in poor health most of his adult life, with lifelong arthritis in his back, and very bad stomach ulcers. He was a heavy smoker, and eventually diagnosed with lung cancer. He also had kidney and liver issues late in life.

Jerry said he just "gave up" after his son's death.........
