Jamaal Charles, Knee - is out indefinitely

The Kansas City Chiefs might be in the market for a running back.

The team placed Jamaal Charles on injured reserve, ESPN reported, as Charles had been battling knee issues this season coming off an ACL repair last year. He was limited to 12 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown in three games this year.

The concern is raised now with starter Spencer Ware having suffered a concussion against the Indianapolis Colts, so finding healthy bodies in the backfield for the Week 9 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is a concern.

With the trade deadline passed, that chore becomes more difficult. The team traded Knile Davis to the Green Bay Packers last week, and he would have been a candidate to return with the Packers releasing Davis this week. However, it appears Davis is signing with the New York Jets, per his agent.

Charcandrick West could be in line for a heavy workload in the short term. The Chiefs also signed former Tennessee Titans second-rounder Bishop Sankey off the New England Patriots’ practice squad, and they have two backs, Darrin Reaves and Zac Brooks, on their practice squad. Other help could come from wide receivers Tyreek Hill and De’Anthony Thomas, who have experience in the backfield in college and the NFL.

Charles is eligible to return before the end of the season, but that could be pending a visit with orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, who will inspect Charles’ right knee and determine his chances for playing again this season. Charles, who turns 30 in December, has been limited to eight games combined in 2015 and 2016 and would be entering the final year of his deal in 2017.
