Anyone out there who can tell me what might've gone wrong--

I have an HTC Desire that came stock w/ Android 2.2 (Froyo). The apps I've loaded have finally eaten up too much of the phone's onboard memory (576 MB) that it has noticeably slowed down the processes. As any HTC phone owner will know, most Android apps cannot be moved from the phone to the micro SD card (a ridiculous manufacturer-imposed limitation if you ask me).

Rooting the phone's OS will take care of that problem, but the thing
is, after installing the HBoot USB driver onto my laptop and trying to root the phone with Unrevoked (ver. 3.22), nothing happens past the splash screen of Unrevoked. I've never installed HTC Sync onto my laptop, and I've never even used the stock 2Gb micro SD that came with the phone (I immediately replaced it w/ a 16Gb mem card upon buying the phone), so there is absolutely no possibility that the HTC Sync on the 2Gb-card automatically installed itself (a big no-no for those looking to root their HTC's).

So why am I not getting any further than the startup splash screen of Unrevoked? Thanks for any help.
