why is norton a joke? please elaborate.
i have known a couple of people that used free avast and still had computer problems on relatively new pcs.

if you're using a new computer every 3 years or so then you shouldn't have problems with norton, i have been using norton since 1995 or so on all my computers and have never had a single virus or issue.

i don't think you will ever find a single human being that has used a free firewall/antivirus package for 16 years without a problem. you get what you pay for in this world.

Avira Antivir is light and very good. Especially recommended for older computers... and you cannot beat the price. Another free options are AVG and Avast.

I use the same. AVG has not let me down.

I use Norton and I like it because it doesn't take up alot of ram like McCaffee(?) does.

checkout HitmanPro for an alternative spyware scanner, it is cloud software that works differently than other programs and it's found some pesky hidden viruses for me and gotten rid of them

Never buy antivirus software...it's just a waste of money. Plenty of free programs that do the job fine.
