It has a "best by" date on it so if your hittin 10-teamers you might throw it at the garbageman on that date but since I like to bet on Miami and watch every team in the league beat them by 20 I need to know what the REAL expiration date?
Whats the REAL expiration date of milk?

#4The date on the jug is the last day the store can sell it at the store. How long milk will last before spoils depends on temperature and exposure to light. If the milk is refrigerated at 40 degrees and is in a solid color jar (not clear jugs) it can last longer than the expiration date.Comment -

#5Come on down to Costa Rica, and you'll be shocked to find that our milk is sold in boxes on store shelves (unrefrigerated), and the date on the box is often 6-9 months away (as long as you don't open the box). Once opened, I suppose it would last a week or so, but I don't really know, because I drink alot of milk.
And yah, eggs are sold the same way.Comment -

#6I heard you can let expiration on most items go past 3-4 months but in all seriousness with Milk you have to smell and look at it.Comment -

#8Milk actually smell bad a few days before it goes bad. So you probably have up to a week after expiration. It will smell terrible though at the end.Comment -

#10If it hasn't been exposed to high temps and light it can last for a while after the date on the jug. Only real way to tell is via a taste test. If there is no sourness to it its okay to consume.Comment -

Cowmilk is all the same worldwide in Ukraine supermarket milk can also be stored for 6 months - but home produced one gets sour in 2 days in winter and the very next day in summer - THAT's the milk we all wanna drink - not soy drink with a milk label on itComment -

#15ok here's a trick so you can tell if your milk has gone bad
just pure a bit of the milk in a small cooking pot and boil it, if it starts solidifying, it means its gone bad, if it just boils, it means it has not gone bad and yu can drink itComment -

#18yea no more than 3-4 days is a pretty good bet. As someone else said sell by is the last day a seller can physically sell the product on a shelf.Comment -

#19After you open milk the first time add a little salt (a quarter teaspoon at the most per gallon) and shake up the jug rreal good.
You'll get a couple more days out of it and you won't taste the salt.
I saw this on tv or heard it on the radio a while back. Salt is a natural preservative.
Sounds wierd, but it really works.Last edited by DEP78; 03-03-11, 03:37 PM.Comment -

#25I won't buy milk unless its got at least two weeks shelf life .... I always seem to get wary of it around 3/4 days before the expiration date ... I'm really weird with milk ... If you've ever had a huge-ass mouthful of sour milk .. you won't make the mistake a second time. :0)Comment -
