Still a bargain compared to the peak in the mid-1990's.
Mid-levels is a very popular area for expats.

it's furnished so you're paying for the nice tv, sofa, bed etc. without that stuff it'd probably be 600k.

i am pretty sure commuting is tough in a place like hong kong so they can get away with those prices

has to be somewhere better to rent around there for the 6k/month that mortgage would cost?

Actually when I look into it, it would have been a similar amount.

Property prices collapsed (by around 50%) between 1996 and 1998 and stayed roughly flat for 5 years after that. They have recovered since then.

When I lived there (moved in 1999) we had a 3000sq ft apartment in the New Territories which we rented for HKD 35,000 per month. It would be nearly double that now.

If you have no daily obligations in HK, but lets say only twice weekly, then you better live in Macau. Still a lot cheaper.

I was planning on getting a job in HK. I haven't really looked into Macau. All I hear about Macau is the gambling.

I will not argue that those 4 places are expensive, but I disagree that you may not enjoy living there if you are not rich. In fact I enjoyed living in Hong Kong 15 years ago very much not being rich. Nowadays being able to spend a bit more I do not find Hong Kong any more attractive.

Why not Thailand, Vietnam or the Philippines? For that price, you could literally build a 5,000 sq.ft mansion. And these countries are all just +/- one hour away from HK by plane.

Make oodles of money in a developing country, playtime in a rich country.
