In an increasingly hard line from the Biden administration, the secretary of homeland security, Alejandro Mayorkas, said on Thursday evening that 24,000 border patrol agents and officers had been sent to the border to enforce US laws, adding: “The border is not open.
“Starting tonight, people who arrive at the border without using a lawful pathway will be presumed ineligible for asylum. We are ready to humanely process and remove people without a legal basis to remain in the US,” he said.
The secretary added on Friday morning, appearing on CNN, of migrants arriving at the southern border: “We are taking them into our custody, we are screening and vetting them and if they do not have a basis to remain, we will remove them very swiftly.”
"I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come. Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border. There are legal methods by which migration can and should occur, but we, as one of our priorities, will discourage illegal migration. And I believe, if you come to our border, you will be turned back."
The vice president's comments were widely criticized as insensitive to real asylum claims, which migrants have legal rights to initiate upon arrival in the U.S. even if the means of arrival are unlawful.
In a gaggle with reporters on the tarmac in Guatemala City earlier this month, Harris defended her message to migrants.
"I'm really clear we have to deal with the root cause," she said. "And that is my focus. Period."

These include Operation Gatekeeper in San Diego, CA, Operation Hold the Line in El Paso, TX, Operation Rio Grande in McAllen, TX, Operation Safeguard in Tucson, AZ, and the Arizona Border Control Initiative (ABCI) along the Arizona border.

An increase in smuggling activities has pushed the Border Patrol to the front line of the U.S. war on drugs. Our role as the primary drug-interdicting organization along the Southwest border continues to expand. The heightened presence of Border Patrol agents along the Southwest border has burdened narcotic traffickers and human smugglers. In FY 2012, Border Patrol agents on the Southwest border seized more than 5,900 pounds of cocaine and more than 2.2 million pounds of marijuana.
In 2019, Harris accused then-President Donald Trump of sending the military to the border as part of a "grand display based on his agenda about vilifying people and building a wall" and also accused him of "criminalizing people, innocent people."
"The Vice President is committed to addressing the root causes of migration, which also addresses why migrants are coming to our border," she said.
But that message had been undercut by the Guatemalan president who, in an interview that aired Sunday, blamed what he saw as a more welcoming message to migrants by the new administration for the surge in migration.
"The message changed too: ‘We’re going to reunite families, we’re going to reunite children,’" he told CBS News. "The very next day, the coyotes were here organizing groups of children to take them to the United States."
"We asked the United States government to send more of a clear message to prevent more people from leaving," he said.

All the laws and rules mean nothing unless they are correctly enforced. These "processed" migrants are being given welcome packages with a pre-paid phone (paid for by US taxpayers) and a court date sometime in 2027 or 2028. How many are going to show up for their court date?
In the meantime, Biden doesn’t truly care about the debt ceiling. How can he when he has to feed and house 5 million illegal immigrants every day.
