Turns out DJ Screw died in 2000, so how could he do a cover from the album Chronic 2001?

Well, it's because Chronic 2001 came out in November of 1999. The Chronic was the first album and that title was owned by Death Row Records.

The follow up album by Dre was a different record company, Aftermath Records.. Dre's follow up was going to be called Chronic 2000, and even though Death Row owned the rights to "The Chronic" so did the distributor at the time, Interscope.

Suge Knight found out about Dre's title and moved to release a compilation from Death Row, with Priority as the distributor.

Suge released Chronic 2000 in May of 1999 and Dre sued. They decided that both could use the name.

So Dre went to Chronic 2001 later that year. I lived in LA and I remember a Chronic 2001 campaign with Interscope, I even remember album covers.

But Priority broke off the deal and threaten to sue Dre if he used the Chronic trademark.

Dre caved and eventually called the album "2001"
