you would think with modern technology there would be better ways to be prepared and then take care of the freezing rain as it fell
even by me now we still have tons of snow piles from the big storm a couple of weeks ago. unless they melt they go nowhere. can't even get more than one car down my block at a time.

How much do you think most Texas Municipalities budget for rock salt, salt spreader Trucks and Snow plows?
prob about the same amount that Kansas Budgets for Typhoon, Tidal Wave and Tsunami Detectors

These kinds of Freak Black Ice events, usually happen in a very quick period of time, where Temps are rapidly dropping and within secs a wet road becomes invisible black ice that. Usually on bridges, overpasses, ramps, ect. since they freeze first, which looks to be the case here.

You shouldn’t be going 70 mph if temps are below freezing and there is any precipitation in the area. I grew up in Buffalo I know about ice. We don’t have pileups like this ever. These idiots just don’t know how to drive in this weather.
One person has died following a 75-car pileup Tuesday afternoon near Buffalo, according to Mike Cassella of the New York State Police. Another person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following the crash just before 2 p.m. on the eastbound section of the New York State Thruway near the Depew exit (Exit 49). The pileup closed the Thruway in both directions between the I-290 inter change (Exit 50) and the Pembroke exit (48A). Eastbound traffic re-opened about 10:30 p.m.
https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news...ia/1740196466/ LEROY, NY (WROC) – All lanes have re-opened after a pile-up crash involving more than 20 vehicles near Batavia shut down the NY state thruway in both directions Thursday afternoon. Troopers say 21-vehicles, including tractor trailers, were involved in the crash near milemarker 382 around 2 p.m. in the eastbound lanes. Troopers are working to determine injuries to drivers. We’re told a trooper was involved in the wreck and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

You hit black ice you can have All God tires and it's not going to matter, especially going 60 mph.

Only tires that could have helped a little in this situation would have been studded winter tires, which of course no one in Texas would ever use.

They also get five months of icy roads not one or two days. One death in two years of ten months of winter not bad compared to five deaths in a few days of ice Texas for in same timeframe

In a lot of places, there's no motivation to do it. Get plenty of snow in my neck of the woods. For my family in Georgia - they can go years without it. When it snows, people make fun of them for freaking out etc - but it's unfamiliar.
It's a sad lesson in physics. With those speeds, and some ice mixed it - it's almost surprising more weren't hurt.
The idea that a place like Texas would have vehicle to salt roads at the ready in the rare event it happened is just wishful thinking.
Beyond scary stuff - especially to be damaged and knowing there's more coming behind.

I think that speaks to the point of why would someone born and raised in Texas ever be thinking about icy roads suddenly happening on an overpass when temps quickly drop from 37 when they got in car to 33 in a few mins.
they don't have any practice with that shit, and they don't have dedicated government personal that take care of the roads in that kind of weather.
It was a very freak thing, I don't blame any of the drivers without knowing a lot more. But even then I bet I would not blame 99% of them

Those things (freezing rain etc) happen in areas where people actually see it often, and there still are massive pileups.
