Agreed and I'm not into that type of child thing. Not one bit.

But the academic in me recognizes two things.

First, the form of innocence being lost and the resulting social behavior problems are completely constructs of our society. It's a societal pressure that deems the behavior so bad that it causes the poor adjustment. There are some tribal societies that, in order to become a man, the boy must suck an elder khak and, well you know, take the medicine. It's a right of passage.

In western society, those kids grow up to fuk shit up.

I only bring up this point because, like I said I'm not into it, but this child fetish shit is not some low percentage deviant behavior...the second point.

It was once estimated that one in three children had an uncle or father that molested them. That's how common the behavior seems to be among the population. I have seen none of that in my home growing up and it isn't around our kids at all.

But we are just one family and some pockets of the country are growing with those who are into that; it becomes generational as well.

With such a high rate among the population, it begs the question of just how biologically deviant the behavior is among the population. Again, it is so not my thing, but we know it is the thing of many.

Socially, it's clearly deviant and some of that is wisdom passed from the ancients. It's tough to say what to make of it all, but without a doubt, depending on what society you live in, one can be either scarred for life or celebrated into adulthood.

Our kids learned early about what would be a violation of their space and bodies.

They have been learning how to defend themselves and we've really forced a "no secrets" attitude. That has to bend a little. Both of our soon to be teenage daughters deserve to keep some secrets (mainly innocent ones of course), it's only fair and a part of growing up.

But anything uncertain or potentially harmful I would hope our kids trust us enough to let us know.

we’ve always been good at not judging her in hopes it would
give her a sense of confidence to share anything good or bad with us
once you let that shock factor show or you judge that trust is out the window

There's a line between being a parent and friend. Our generation is a bit different than our parents and I try to keep a very open mind and try to objectively remember what it was like at that age or around there.

What I mean is that people tend to remember their past as being better people than they really are. Psychologists liken it to a butterfly. Adults look back at their cocoon times but often remember themselves as butterflies.

I'll try to remember that those were cocoon times and we weren't always pretty, elegant butterflies. We were growing and learning.
