Cheney 'rogue' for talking about war against Iran
A political analyst says former US vice president Dick Cheney is “a rogue character of the worst kind” for threatening Iran with military action.
“Dick Cheney of course is the man behind the Afghan war, the Iraq war,” Stephen Lendman told Press TV on Monday. “He is a rogue character of the worst kind.”
On Sunday, Cheney said that military action against Iran is likely unavoidable in order to stop Iran’s nuclear program.
Cheney, who served from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush, made the remarks after George Stephanopoulos, host of ABC's 'This Week' program, asked him, "is military action against Iran inevitable?"
"I have trouble seeing how we're going to achieve our objective short of that (military action)," Cheney said.
"I doubt very much that the diplomacy will be effective if there's not the prospect that, if diplomacy fails, that we will, in fact, resort to military force," he added. “I don’t have a lot of confidence in the administration to be able to negotiate an agreement."
Cheney was a key architect of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 that according to some estimates killed over one million people.
The analyst also noted that Washington’s sanctions and military threats against Iran over its civilian nuclear program are a “pretext for regime change” due to Iran’s “independence and sovereignty.”
“America simply does not tolerate independent governments,” Lendman said. “Iran is a sovereign, independent government, it (US) wants it replaced with a pro-Western, subservient, puppet government.”
“Iran’s (nuclear) program is entirely peaceful, America knows it, Israel knows it, European leaders know it, the IAEA knows it, they all know it,” he said.
He added that US sanctions against Iran are “absolutely illegal, they target mostly ordinary Iranians, they harm them and according to international law, this is absolutely unacceptable, it’s illegal.”
