Parkinson's medication turned me into gambling gay sex thief, says 51-year-old married father

A married father of two is taking pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline to court because he claims one of their products turned him into a gay gambling addict.
Didier Jambart began taking ReQuip tablets in 2003 after he was prescribed it to treat his Parkinson's disease.
But the 51-year-old says his behaviour changed beyond recognition leading to eight suicide attempts and gambling problems that saw him steal and lose his family's savings.

It is not the first case of its kind. In 2010 former IT manager Peter Shepherd, then 60, ended up in court after he underwent an astonishing personality change when prescribed Cabergoline by his GP in 2001.
Mr Shephard told how he became a sex-crazed transvestite after taking Cabergoline, also a Parkinson’s disease drug, and also blew £400,000 on a luxury lifestyle.
Mr Jambart, from Nantes in France, says he and his wife are now outcasts in their home town because she stuck by him while he stole to feed his gambling habit and wound up 130,000 euros in debt.

He also became a compulsive gay sex addict and began exposing himself on the Internet and cross-dressing. His risky sexual encounters led to him being raped, he said.
'The first four or five days (after taking the drug) I was bursting with energy,' he said.
'I would get up at four in the morning and run 10, 25 kilometres. But later, it went more than too far.
'My life was ruined, my family and I were treated like we had the plague.'
The behaviour stopped when he ceased taking the drugs in 2005 but by then he had been demoted in his job and was suffering from psychological trauma resulting from his addictions, his lawyers said.
Requip has been known for years to have undesired side effects but a warning only appeared on its package insert in 2006, his lawyers said.
Lawyer Jacques-Antoine Robert, representing GlaxoSmithKline, said that scientific knowledge at the time of Jambart's troubles did not suggest 'any indication of the (undesirable) effects of Ropinirole', a molecule in the drug.
He admitted there was a possibility of of an 'extremely rare reaction' but said the court's dossier did not contain sufficient proof to establish causality and requested further technical reports.
However, Jacqueline Houdayer, the president of CADUS patients' aid group, said she had been contacted by 100 other people who had had the same side effects as Jambart.
Mr Jambart wants 450,000 euros from Glaxo, which he accuses of selling a 'defective' drug.
A judgement is due on March 24.
