    Grunting in tennis
Everything in the history of this forum has been building towards this one moment when we finally deal with THE big issue:

What's with all the grunting in tennis?

I just flipped by some tennis and it was nuts. These guys were making loud noises on every shot. Not just little "Oof!" noises but great big, OOORRGGGGHHHHH!!!

And not just on strenuous smashes either. I mean, they would tone it down a bit on the little dink shots but it was still. OORRRGGGGHHHHHH!!

I've played tennis. It's not necessary to grunt. It's ridiculous.

If they had rules that said, "No more grunting," everyone would stop. I'm sure there would be some initial whining but then the grunting would stop and they would just play tennis.

Do some fans actually like the grunting? How can you like the grunting?

I'm afraid someone is going to say that when the women do it, it's very erotic. I won't have a response for that.

But I'm saying just stop already with the grunting, you obnoxious bastards!

I believe it probably started out as some sort of strategy so the opponent couldn't hear the ball coming off the racket and it took off from there. Or maybe they thought it would be distracting for the opponent. I agree it's not necessary though I'm not sure how they'd enfore a no grunting rule.

Nolan Ryan used to do it as well. Not as pronounced or loud as some of these tennis players as you described, Mud. But a little audible exhale when he was throwing his heater. When he made the same noise the few times he threw his breaking ball, batters were either frozen or looking foolish flailing at air.

If I'm bored enough to watch a tennis match, I pick up a book and start reading.

It's Sharapova's fault. If she can do it, then every feels that it's okay. I don't mind a little grunting but some of these players's grunting is truly disturbing. Sharapova sounds like she is being raped. Some of the grunts from some of the players are so annoying and distracting that it makes it harder to concentrate on your game. Something needs to be done before it truly gets out of hand.

              i agree bud.

it's a shame that the tennis higher ups are trying to ban players from doing that though

Nothing was worst than Monica Seles's grunt of "Ahhhh-Eeeeee". Repeatedly after every stroke. Sounded like a damn horse.

I'd kinda find it hard to believe hitters could either conciously or unconciously swing at the noise itself. Ryan's fastball was way too quick for that..

maybe i misunderstood though..but yeah..You'd have to sit on his fastball regardless and just tip your cap if he throws you a breaking ball for a strike.

It's fun when the women do it, but even that starts to get annoying.

For every Sharapova or Kournakova, there are 5 butch chicks like Amelie Mauresmo.

If I saw Amelie Mauresmo grunting, I would not be having erotic thoughts. I would seriously be wondering if her testicles were stuck to her leg or some damn thing.

                      Not erotic. Quit grunting.

Sharapova uses her grunting in key moments of games, and it gets louder and louder with every shot. It sounds to me as if she is willing her opponent to make a mistake by doing this...in fact i am pretty sure she is doing it to gain a psychological edge over her opponents.

                            Grunting should be banned.
