With all the hype this past week, I couldn't help but think of where it all started.
Jay Berwanger.
As an all-purpose player for the University of Chicago, he was the first Heisman Trophy winner (1935). He then became the first player chosen in the inaugural NFL draft in 1936.
History shows that he was drafted by the Eagles but then his rights were aquired by the Chicago Bears. When a deal that was satisfactory to both parties could not be reached, Berwanger set aside any NFL aspirations to become a foam-rubber salesman.
Times have changed.
