    Newbie here... don't hurt me!
Complete newbie when it comes to Sports betting (especially on the Internet). With NFL starting this weekend (ok... technically it started last night), I figured that this would be as good of a time as any to donate my money to worthy books!

I have gambled online in casinos (+ $3K over the past 6 weeks)... so I know about how to deposit and so forth.

At the moment, my bet weights are probably only going to be $10/each. Maybe I'll go higher; but my BR is going to be $1,000 to start with (not counting any bonuses).

At the moment, I'm looking to join BoDog. Looked liked a good place for "recreational" play... and the 50% bonus for online check doesn't sound that bad either. Anyone else got a good recommendation on a place?

While I can choose picks from people here (like Razz) or a free service (like Fezzik)... is there any other service that you use? How about books/info on how to pick?

Thanks all - Good luck this weekend (or any day that you've got $ on the line).

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

You came to the right place.

For now, it sounds like you might want to stay with the books like Bodog that offer free Neteller payouts and good customer service that will help you get started. VIP and First Fidelity fit into that category as well. Each also offers the eCheck option. VIP's eCheck payout carries a $10 charge.

As someone mentioned in a previous thread, this will help you to avoid wasting a signup bonus in the future. Most bonus books will always have something available, but a Pinnacle or Hollywood is less likely to change their bonus plan. If you plan on making bigger deposits once you learn the ropes, these one-time bonuses on large deposits will still be available.

Hey welcome to the site Jeff.

I'm not 100% clear on the money transfer methods you have available to you, but 5 Dimes sounds like another good book for your style. Some people find the way they do bonuses tricky though. But they have so many betting optons, it's like a kid-in-a-candystore situation.

I can't tell you much about whose picks to use. I just use my own. I would never pay for picks. The only suggestion I would make when evaluating on-line cappers is look for longer term success and don't get caught up in somone hyping a streak.

If you are lookign to bet $10 a pop, you need to stick to the books that offer the free withdrawals. As Bill pointed out, Bodog, and VIP are good places to go. And I might even suggest a place like sportsbook.com. Now the thing about sportsbook.com, is they have awful cs. So if and when there is a propblem, it could take a couple of weeks to clear up. But the nice thing is, they take samll wagers. I think the minimum bet may only be $1. I know i've placed $5 bets there. They also offer free payouts, and have a bunch of promos.

Don't take Razz's baseball picks until he gets off the recent streak he's on. Better stick to football.

I get most of my information from the Winning Points database, which is a paid service which keeps track of pitchers' records, bullpens, ballparks, over/under databases, and more.

I would say to stick with B rated books. Its dumb to spend 2 weeks tracking down a 40 buck withdrawal. :0000049:

Thanks all... appreciate the welcome and comments.

I opened an account with BoDog this evening ($500 through eCheck) and have already made my first betting mistake!

I made a smaller bet on a pick than I wanted and, after confirming the bet, went back and then another bet with the "correct" amount. Of course, I now know that, once confirmed, bets are final. It's only a $10 mistake; but that still doesn't make it better (unless, of course, I win!)

                  Thanks again

                  Jeff

PS - By going through an affiliate link, I am (hopefully) going to be getting a pick service for 30 days free (Johnny Detroit's). Looks to be a good service (I was actually looking at them prior to seeing the promotion on another site).

Welcome to SBR! Be very wary of these pick services. All they are interested in is your credit card number. Do not pay for picks! If you need help, advice, or even free picks, just visit this message board!
