I got a new hard drive and put it in. It says operating system not found. By the sounds of your guys' posts I need to find or download the windows disc? This recovery disc I have won't do anything for me?

      I have 3 disks:

Recovery and Applications that came with the computer

Seatools diagnostics that the shop left in my computer

Windows XP Professional that my cousin burned for my brother and it worked for his computer. This sounds like the one I need. I ran this and it immediately says
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
      <Windows root>/system32/hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file

Any simple solutions that can be explained to a computer illiterate person? I have points to give but keep in mind I can't give points to 30 different people telling me to do 30 different things. And I can't give points if your posts don't make any sense to a computer illiterate person like myself.

When/where are you getting this error? Is that a XP installation CD that's giving the error when you're trying to boot from it?

You should be able to use your recovery discs but I can't really give you any step by steps because they all vary.

If you put the recovery disc in and reboot/turn on the laptop pay attention to the screen and it should give you the option to "Press XX to enter recovery setup" or something like that... If you get that it should be simple to follow the on-screen instructions from there.

I tried to post yesterday saying I'm back to normal but was literally running out the door and didn't have the time

I had to go into setup and switch my boot options from HDD to Cd Rom or whatever it was. Then I ran the recovery disk. Now I'm back on the internet. Can't believe those assholes tried to charge me $200. Also, they told me to trade in my computer when I got a new one and they "might" give me $100 for it. ******* assholes.

I'll send you some points anyway for trying to help

glad you got it up and running bob. but as long as all your other components are working theres no need to get a new lappy in the near future.

and yeah thats how i get a bunch of business is from people that check out the prices of places like best try and office depot. i charge no where near the amount they do to rip people off.
