Which sports are you most interested in? Each is like a different college course.
Each takes a different way of thinking.
To get you started:
Football:
How pro sports gamblers beat the pro football point spread;
Win more, lose less;
College football handicapping, a professional approach;
Basketball:
Investing in college basketball (gets high marks, but not from me. More a reflection of the other books that are out there).
Read about gamblers who've been there and done that in Gambling Wizards.
College bookstore: gamblersbook.com
There is a lot of BS out there. A lot. Most people do this for fun. That's who you're up against. So there is your edge. The weakest spot of most bettors, even good ones, is money management. Pay extra attention to that. You may want to give yourself a goal each year, and only try to master that material, instead of everything at once. You can know a lot more about sports than about the stock market. But it takes discipline. Read about trading, science, and anything that connects to probability. And last but not least, learn how to manage yourself. Control of emotions (not suppression) is a huge factor in success. Gambling is like a Zen path towards perfect inner balance; it will test every weakness in your character.

Check out Sharp Sports Betting by "Stanford Wong". IMHO, it's the best introductory book on sport betting out there.

Remember money mgmt is key to being successful. For Example
A person that picks 60% winners and has below avg money mgmt skills
is worse off than A person who picks 53% winners and has above avg
money mgmt skills.
Also line movement and getting a feel on teams is
a key factor to my success as well.
I always believe if you enjoy what
you are doing and aren't bored than you have a good chance of making $
no matter what vocation you are in.
