Calvin's horse isn't quite what he's had in the Derby before, but you never know. This looks like a mediocre bunch; maybe Calvin can shock 'em again.

WIW, here's my Derby Analysis. As we all know, the Derby is unique for many reasons. Prominent amongst them is the desire of some owners to have their horses run, regardless of their chances to win, just so they can later brag to people that they had Derby horse. This results in a good portion of the field that can't win but can, and often do, compromise the chances of real contenders just by cluttering up the field and impeding the progress of late runners particularly. So I'll try to eliminate them and evaluate the rest.

                                1. ArchArchArch - This absurdly named colt has some ability, but is stuck down on the rail and consequently has two chances, slim and none, and Slim has left the course.

                                2. Brilliant Speed - Lightly raced, but well bred horse with stayers top and bottom in his pedigree. Just up to win Blue Grass in latest over a modest field. Top trainer and adequate rider. Chance at a big price.

                                3. Twice the Appeal - Unappealing shipper from Sunland Park. In way over his head. No shot.

                                4. Stay Thirsty - Named for the guy in the beer ad, this Pletcher second stringer a cut below the top level. Same connections as Uncle Mo with top rider, but nothing in his previous races indicates that he belongs. Eliminate.

                                5. Decisive Moment - Owned by Just for Fun stable, which sums up his chances. Stakes placed at Grade 3 level. Eliminate .

                                6. Comma to the Top - Curiously named colt has already outperformed his modest breeding in California. Has speed but no indication that he can get a mile and a quarter. Eliminate.

                                7. Pants on Fire - Another speedball from Louisiana with suspect distance ability. Buried by Mucho Macho Man in Fair grounds stake. Conditions against him, will take money due to his rider, Rosie Napravnik. No shot.

                                8. Dialed In - Putative favourite with the abdication of Uncle Mo. this Zito trained son of Mineshaft (successful Derby sire) edged Shackleford in Florida Derby. Never worse than second in 4 four races. Connections winners of this race, an important consideration. Good post position and Leparoux on fire, won 3 yesterday. Hard to ignore.

                                9. Derby Kitten - Just qualified on earnings in the Lexington on April 23rd, this Kitten's Joy colt on the improve. Trained by Mike Maker, perennial Kentucky leading conditioner, has Castellano up, known as a route riding specialist. Chance to hit the board.

                                10. Twinspired - Another Maker entry, this one couldn't last vs. Brilliant Speed in Blue Grass. Would be a surprise.

                                11. Master of Hounds - An interesting entrant, trained by Aiden O'Brien, Europe's top conditioner, this colt was beaten a zop in the $2,000,000 UAE Derby vs. the Continent's top 3yos. A son of leading sire Kingmambo, the brilliant Garrett Gomez takes the ride. That's a tough combo to beat. A HUGE chance in here at a big price.

                                12. Santiva - Trained by local top conditioner, Eddie Kenneally, and ridden by another hot rider, Shaun Bridgmohan, threw in a clunker as the favourite in the Bluegrass, which makes his current form suspect. Chance on best, but prefer others.

                                13. Mucho Macho Man - Another Fair grounds refugee, has never won a Grade 1, let alone a race like the Derby. Would be a surprise.

                                14. Shackleford - Good Florida form, couldn't last in latest to Dialed In. Hard to see him getting the distance. Possible board chance.

                                15. Midnight Interlude - Top California shipper, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by star jock Victor Espinosa this colt has good tactical speed and may get the trip. A dangerous contender.

                                16. Animal Kingdom - A pick up ride for Johnny Velasquez, this obscurely bred colt laughed home in the Spiral and is coming to hand for top trainer Graham Motion. Has not faced this class yet, but has done nothing to suggest that he won't be competitive. Good chance at a big price.

                                17. Soldat - A speed horse who has done nothing to suggest that he can get this trip. Eliminate.

Possible bets: Exacta box: 2,8.11.15,16. W/P bets: 8/11/15

Gonna be a Surprise or two on the board I am sure, but just have a feeling about Arch...If the biggest thing against him is the post position, a smart ride by his pilot and a fast pace could set him up if his driver can negotiate traffic...who knows...box 4 or 5 and have a cocktail...Good Luck All !!!
