Whitlock sets the record straight re: Fab 5 documentary
I've noticed a lot of love for this show and this group of players on the board since its release. Here is the truth:

I miss reading Whitlock at the KC Star, while he is normally a racist, I still do enjoy his writings.

It was more accurate than the Jalen Rose story, but Rose's story was more entertaining.

His radio show on 610 Sports was always entertaining....that station was a trainwreck, and now they've got on these "new school" stooges trying to be cool. P

I guess it depends on if you're looking for style or substance from this story.

I found it interesting that ESPN played the more glorified/pioneer angle with the Fab 5 -- who cheated and helped put Michigan on probation -- while being much more "documentary" with SMU. Just bothers me that the Fab 5's "above the law and rules" attitude hasn't changed in 20 years, and that ESPN is a willing participant in keeping this fantasy intact.

Why does it always have to be about black and white? Reverse racism is brutal in this country, and it never dies.

That article needed more Whitlock. As in more of his focus. Thing read like a rough draft.

What Webber says in his blog about Coach K is true. At the time he wanted to recruit well-educated, mannered men who would stay at Duke for years. Because it was harder to make a guy like Webber buy into his philosophy perhaps.

The Fab5 was a huge thing. Being from Detroit I knew about Webber and Jalen for a long time and most here knew they were going to the nba eventually. The were really big in the media and they were selling so much merchandise(at least in our state) which was not common for college teams. I think they deserve the hype- 5 freshman losing in b2b finals. It is still a great story at the end of the day.

Even knowing what you know now about Ed Martin?

You do realize that all the banners are down and the records are gone now at U-M because of this group and its cheating, right?

They accepted some money on the side but Webber was still broke in college...Its not like he was Reggie Bush going around buying expensive things while in college. They barely had money for gas. I know the banners are down but what did they really do besides accept money on the side? It is wrong by the rules but it doesn't make me think less of them because they took some cash. Was their something else they did that I missed?

I lost all respect for him during the Cutler situation. Boers and Bernstein owned his ass.

The University of Michigan men's basketball program imposed heavy sanctions Thursday to hopefully avoid further discipline from the NCAA, including forfeiting games from five different seasons.

The university punished its men's basketball program after a federal investigation revealed that former booster Ed Martin had given a total of $616,000 to Chris Webber and three other ex-Michigan players.
Martin, a retired Ford Motor Co. electrician, said he gave Webber and his family $280,000 in cash and gifts while the player was in high school and college.

Yeah I use to love 610 but its gone to hell, still like Nick Wright but he can't carry a 4 hour show by himself.
