1) No, not a good idea.
Unless you are Perry Mason defening yourself in a slam dunk criminal case, no, not a good idea.
2) Yes, judges frown upon it.

Not a good idea to represent yourself.(Especially in a criminal case) you are begging to go to jail.

Best bet is to just go along with a public defender...but spend $500 on the side for some witness/jury tampering....always a crowd pleaser.
Good luck and if you do get found guilty...I'll send you some commissary for your SBR points
Just joking man...good luck.

Some people will have to spend waaayyy too much money on a trial and some public defenders are bonkers. My buddy had a PD that told him to plead guilty to kidnapping and weapons charges stemming from a robbery retaliation and take 7 years. He took a loan from a friend and hired consultation from various other lawyers with credibility. NONE of them said plead guilty, they ALL said there was a mistake in witness testimony from time of incident to later-date questioning to preliminary hearings and such. However, for them to represent him would be anywhere from 25,000-60,000 depending on length of trial so they all said represent yourself using these tactics and pointing out these problems in consistency. Long-story short, I am going to blaze a blunt with him later. He walks free and the witness looks like a fool.

You probably won't get much of a response to your question from those with first-hand experience because internet usage is pretty limited in prison.

I can tell you whatever you want about criminal law. Representing yourself is not good. Any other questions. I'm your guy. Spent a lot of time in a law library.

I seen people do it. But they were already done, just wanted to make a mockery of the justice system.

Get a lawyer. In this court system you are guilty until proven innocent.

Considered It because I was involved in a slam dunk case for malicious wounding. I got talked out of it and took the public defender instead. Probably glad I did.

Kwame Kilpatrick was a lawyer and did not even represent himself in his trial.
