Don't confuse odds with edge or expected value

Odds of winning are fixed, 1 in 176 million - use Excel =COMBIN(56,5)*(46)

But since payout varies EV does increase as jackpot increases. However when millions of people play, you get the divisor effect where 2 or more people could win, reducing payout, so as players pile on (more than 176 million ticks sold), EV comes back down. I do not suspect EV ever reaches break even point, but you would need all the data available to do this analysis.

5Dimes had the odds of "Will there be a winner" somewhere around YES -330 NO +270.

someone in my area, about 20 minutes away from my town won a lotto for $45 million....threw the ticket away by accident or didn't realize he won.

Huge dumpster diving going on and people trying to find the ticket. The guy is claiming he won, but doesn't have the ticket. Investigation going on to try and figure this out.

              Krazy shit

Point...don't EVER throw away your ticket until you are 100000% sure it's a loser

it cracks me up why people won't play it until it reaches 200 million or more. they wouldn't even want to win that much if they think about it. people don't want a paltry 10 million so they don't play that week makes no sense. it doesn't make much sense to play at all but you have to cover it and play every drawing no matter how much is in there. why limit your opportunites to win lottery by only playing when it reaches large jackpot. you're much better off playing the smaller individual state lottery games that "only" pay off between 1-10 million. not as many numbers to pick and less competition to hit them.

the odds of winning are 1 in 175 million. the point is, it becomes +EV to actually play the lottery at some point the jackpot is above that (i dont know the exact number, because i dont play the lottery and would think ties make it higher than 175mil).

Its actually closer to 290mil because of chances to split the pot with other winners.

Given the possibilty of multiple winners, the taxes one has to pay and the fact that most people take the cash option, it's almost, if not outright, impossible for the lottery to be +EV.

One ticket here as well; although I was tempted by the store's "buy 10, get a free $2 ticket" deal.
