The amount they claim for the jackpot is a lie. That is the total amount you get if you spread the prize payments over 20 long years... If you take it up front, they give you about 52% of the quoted amount. After they take 1/4 or 1/3 for taxes that is...

So if they claim a $400M prize, best case is you get $156M up front.

If this doesn't show what a rip-off the lottery is, I don't know what does. The government shamelessly promotes the most onerous forms of gambling (slot machines, scratch offs, lottery, horse racing, etc.) as long as they are getting their cut. If they are not getting a cut, they suddenly get all moral about it...

Edit: And as somone already mentioned, the prize can be split.

Aprox 26,000 people played the LOST numbers. Can you imagine if all the lost numbers matched in the lotto drawing? 26,000 people would have thought that they won $355 million dollars! But they would have only won $13,600 each.

about 26,000 people got 3+1 right. impossible to tell how many actually played all 6 LOST numbers. probably a decent chunk though.
