I loved Milo as an announcer. If he indeed ripped Carey thats too bad but as an announcer Milo was one of my all time favorites.

harry carry was better than Hamilton by miles John.

what gets me though is, Milo ripped the whole entire Carry family for years. what makes it even about what he did was, he even ripped him on the day of his funneral !!!

now how classless was that on his part

Books don't sell unless they get promoted. Books don't get promoted unless there's controversy. It's a very simple equation, really. Why get worked up about it?

Getting worked into a lather (not you specifically, Dan, just in general) only does exactly what the writer wants. It focuses attention on the book.

I grew up with Gene Elston, and his understated style is what I came to like in an announcer. You never had to guess what the score was, what the count was, where the ball was hit, any of that with Elston (or others like Ernie Harwell to name one). Never liked Milo's style much, and find it hard to listen to him now because he really doesn't do a very good job of describing the action on the field. And lord help you if some gal from the promotions office comes in for a half-inning to talk about a nickle-98 bobblehead doll the team is giving away a month down the schedule. You have a better chance of knowing who sponsors what billboard at the stadium when Milo's calling a game than you do of knowing what the darn score is

Milo even takes jabs at Larry Dierker (who took a fun jab at Milo in his book a year or so back). If you want to read something funny, pick up Dierker's book and read the first 20 pages or so. The story about Milo and 'woodies' will leave you rolling.

Milo was cool and keep in mind the Astros mostly sucked and I still liked listening to his call.

i still liked harry carry a 100x's better milo though john.

harry went thru about as much misery as milo did, when harry was with the cubs.

vin scully is another good announcer, although alot of people don't like his broadcasting style.

out of all the broadcasters that were mentioned above. i still say jack buck was the best though.

Sports announcers are acquired tastes, in my opinion, like music or spirited beverages. I happen to like Bluegrass and Martini's; someone else prefers Jazz and Scotch.

Funny little bit about Milo's book in today's Tribune:
                Fred Mitchell / Chicago Tribune
Thursday (today), Harry Caray's Restaurant will be the headquarters for the 8th annual Toast to Harry that will be conducted simultaneously in 80 countries.

Restaurant President Grant DePorter says a new drink will be introduced to the public on that day. "It will be called the `Milo,' otherwise known as the Cheap Shot and Sour Grapes,'" said DePorter. The 25-cent drink will be a 2-ounce shot of beer with a side of sour grapes.
