She could have contracted HIV prior to sleeping with FOrrest and died of AIDS without passing the virus on. The risk of transmission of HIV from female to male is only about 0.3% per intercourse act. Since it is inferred that they only had sex once, it's likely that Forrest didn't contract it. Similarly, vertical transmission from mother to child is about 25% without the use of AZT (yes I know it's unlikely it would have been around at the time of the movie). The point is, Jenny may have had HIV prior to sleeping with Forrest and still have her son without transferring the virus to either.

they knew what Aids were back then Im pretty sure, like the whole Rock Hudson thing in the 60's, so i think what she had was cancer.

They never said what it was. When she died she did not look sickly. They showed needle use quite a bit though. I am going to go on a limb and say AIDS or the HEP

The movie was made during the big awareness of AIDS, but was set in the time when they still couldnt identify it, so yet, it is AIDS.

But why not? That's Deuce's point. She's a mess before she has little Forest and seems to clean herself up afterward. Isn't it outside the realm of believability that she managed to avoid AIDS during all her free love, drugged up, sex but gets it AFTER she cleans up?
