Niccolò Paganini - the world's greatest violinist
Franz Liszt - the world's greatest pianist
Feodor Chaliapin - the world's greatest singer
The Berlin Philharmonic - the world's greatest orchestra
Bing Crosby - the world's greatest performer. Others can make a case for Presley or Mercury (personal favorite) but Crosby tops them with the biggest selling record of all time (White Christmas) and 41 #1 hits.

That's the definitive list. I'd be amazed if anyone has a top 5 songs of all time that doesn't contain either Suck My Ass It Smells, Last In Line For The Gang Bang or Needle Up My Cock.

if we are going with all-time as far as general popularity level I would say:
Elvis Presley
Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Garth Brooks
Ani DiFranco
If you were to ask for my favorites:
Guns N Roses
Motley Crue
Alice In Chains
Pantera
Misfits & Dead Kennedys (because I can't decide who I would put ahead of the other)
If you were going to go by the best live acts I have ever seen:
5. Kid Rock - (played for 2.5 hours with 1 20 minute break and had appearances by Rev Run from Run DMC and Dickey Betts from the Allman Bros.)
4. Rancid - imo the best active punk band out there - put on a strong 2hr show and even broke down to an acoustic. this was the only REAL punk show i was ever at where smoking hot girls were singing every word to the song.
3. Alice In Chains - only played for 45 minutes but blew Velvet Revolver off the stage. DuVall is almost to AIC what Brian Johnson is to ACDC.
2. Rage Against the Machine - didn't have all of their cds until I saw them live but the show just blew me away. My only issue was that they could have played longer than 90 minutes.
1. Motley Crue - played for 2 hrs and rocked it like they were back in the shout at the devil days. they played every song i wanted to hear from them and tommy lee did his thing on the drums.
