Weekly Review Jan 23rd
With two great defensive efforts, we finally have our Superbowl match up. Pittsburgh did what many people thought they could not do, and that was too go to ‘Mile High’ stadium in Denver and win. The opposite was true in Seattle with the Seattle crowd and their defense too much for Carolina. We enjoyed a great Sunday here with the NFL results, in particular Pittsburgh’s win.
The NBA week concluded with a record 81 points by Kobe Bryant on Sunday against Toronto. NBA in general was a good week for bookmakers as was the College Basketball.
In an unusual occurrence, many of our smartest customers found it difficult to pick winners in the College basketball this week. It’s always good for us to see our ‘general’ customers win at a sport and our ‘professional’ customers have a tough week. This week did see a lot of Hockey winners by our customers with many markets moving in one direction.
This week also has seen the first ‘major’ tennis tournament in the Australian Open. Betting action has almost been as hot as the weather in Australia. Despite some big withdrawals like Nadal and Safin, it seems our customers enjoy placing bets on the tennis at night time here, especially being able to watch most games live. We had high hopes that one of the men could beat Roger Federer, but with the loss of Andy Roddick now, it seems Federer is heading towards this years first Major victory.
Pittsburgh at Denver
Denver was a popular pick with a lot of our customers. The general consensus was that Pittsburgh would not have enough ‘Gas in the tank’ to battle Denver, especially in the oxygen thin Mile high stadium. Denver was a 3 (-125) point favorite with the game total closing down from 41.5 to 40.5 points. Pittsburgh never gave Denver a sniff though and a good thing for us was the fact that the game total went over aswell. So ‘Dog and over’ is normally a great result. Result- Pittsburgh 34-17
Carolina at Seattle
We opened Seattle a 6 point favorite over Carolina and we immediately received Carolina money. It wasn’t until we dropped all the way to Seattle -3 (-130) until we started to see big Seattle money. Our ‘book’ was pretty balanced at kick off and with a closing line of Seattle -4 (-115). Our only concern was if Seattle won by 3 or 4, then it would have cost us plenty. Result- Seattle 34-14
We have opened our Superbowl odds with Pittsburgh currently a 4 point favorite in Detroit. It really looks like a tremendous betting match and we have already received over $US1 mil already on the match up and we only opened it yesterday!
Until next week,
Regards Shane Catford
