The 3-5 Las Vegas Raiders fired head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, the team announced at 1 a.m. ET, one night after a loss to the Lions. It’s a stunning move, even for a meh team. Two things, quickly:

McDaniels went 9-16 as Las Vegas head coach. Counting his 2009-2010 Broncos tenure, he’s 20-33 despite major success as a New England assistant. You have to wonder if he ever gets another look at a top job.
Owner Mark Davis gets a head start on evaluating coach and GM candidates, as these are the first major firings of the year. ESPN reported last night that linebackers coach Antonio Pierce will be the interim head coach.
