Russ Francis was big name in New England at that time.Steve Grogan quarterback then? I doubt their teams were any good at that time. Perennial losers until Super Bowl massacre against the Bears in the mid 80s.

Actually, the Patriots were VERY GOOD in 1976:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_N...atriots_season
...They gave the Raiders their only loss of the Regular season.
...11-3, made the playoffs. Game in Oakland, they had the Raiders on the ropes. Patriots led, very dubious Roughing the Passer call, Raiders pip them late and go on to win the Super Bowl.

Ok now that you mention I vaguely remember this. I should as I lived through it and watched many games of theirs but all cobwebs for me nowadays. I watched but was never a Patriot fan especially during the Sullivan ownership years. Became a big fan when Belichick and Brady arrived though.

Hey, Keith. Thx for the post.

Ya, the Patriot earlier history was choppy:
*In 1976, Mike Haynes was a rookie DB. Wow, he wound up being a phenomenal player. Notably later on with the Raiders.
*Russ Francis retired prematurely. It had to do with the Darryl Stingley hit. Stingley was his friend, and Francis soured when the Patriots tried to cancel Stingley's medical coverage.
*Bill Walsh talked Francis out of retirement when Francis was covering the Pro Bowl as a reporter.

The Patriots won the 1985 AFC Title game in upset fashion. They won at Miami when the Dolphins had six turnovers. It's one of those games where you wonder "What if?"

What if the Dolphins had won that game?
    1) That would have been Marino's 2nd appearance in the Super Bowl. Chance to secure the elusive ring.
    2) As dominant as the Bears were in 1985, you wonder if the Dolphins were the antidote.
...The Dolphins won the MNF game during the Regular Season.
...Did the Dolphins have to roster to beat the Bears AGAIN in the rematch?

The Bear defense was all about aggression. MOST teams had no solution for that with their base offense. See the two playoff shutouts against the Giants/Rams.

    The Dolphins had:
    1) A good Off Line, headed up by great Center Stevenson.
    2) An All Pro QB in Marino. Key was that he had a quick release. He could pass b4 the rush got home.
    3) The Dolphins had a quick group of smallish receivers. The Marks Brothers + Nat Moore. Tony Nathan out of the backfield.

Man, I would pay to get a chance to see that rematch. The Dolphin formations meant that they'd sometimes force a LB to cover one of their WRs. And Marino was the perfect guy to distribute the ball.
