Hockey fans are crazy but what's up w/ throwing rats?!

At the end of the Hurricanes/Panthers game the fans, obviously, went crazy as Panthers won 1-0. But then they began to throw rats on the ice. I know about squids, but what the hell does throwing rats on the ice means?

I gotta say though, the atmosphere in Florida was crazy fun.

This was from 1996, a Panthers player killed a rat in the dressing room with a hockey stick during the regular season. It fueled their run to the finals against the Avs, but they got swept. the fans used to do it after every goal but the NHL banned it.

It was Scott Mellanby. My first thought when I saw this thread was how the hell has everyone not seen or heard this before but I forget that I'm 40 years old and 96 was a long time ago and also not everyone follows hockey.

I used to live down in South Fla and you're right it was Mellanby. Let me tell you they built this arena in a perfect place in Sunrise. Sunrise has like 100K Canadian snowbirds, they're the ones with Panthers season tickets and they sell out.
